Chamberlin Repeats as Division III National Coach of the Year
January 10, 2006

SALISBURY, Md. - Dr. Dawn Chamberlin has always taken a great deal of pride in bringing the best possible field hockey athletes to Salisbury University, transforming them into better players and then creating a cohesive squad in hopes of leading the Sea Gulls to the NCAA Division III national championship. And after 19 years on the job at SU, she appears to have the corner on the market on doing the job well, leading SU to national titles in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

Chamberlin was honored for her outstanding work on and off the field Saturday when she was named the Dita / National Field Hockey Coach Association NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year. Chamberlin, who was named the NFHCA South Regional Coach of the Year for the sixth time in December, was selected to the national award by Division III coaches across the nation.

"It’s exciting and a great way to culminate the season in terms of the final accolades," Chamberlin stated. "It’s really neat and rewarding to be chosen to this award by your peers. So for them to recognize me as the best coach in the country for the 2005 and 2004 seasons is quite an honor. I’m certainly humbled by that and it’s exciting."

Chamberlin, who has posted a 19-year record of 284-79-8 (.782) and an even more impressive mark of 80-5 (.941) over the past four seasons, said receiving the honor for the second consecutive season is something that she wasn’t expecting.

"I was surprised to receive the award again," Chamberlin added. "I really didn’t think that I would be honored two years in a row. It was a welcome surprise and I didn’t expect it. With any voting there is certainly politics involved and there were other coaches out there that had terrific seasons and were very deserving."

Despite winning the Capital Athletic Conference field hockey championship for the last 11 years and being named the league’s Coach of the Year for the past six seasons, Chamberlin said she feels that sometimes coaches tend to be overlooked for postseason honors because winning becomes the norm.

"I know there was some controversy in the 2003 season because I wasn’t selected as the Regional Coach of the Year (after winning her first national title),” the 1985 Iowa graduate stated. "And some people inside and outside of the region were very disturbed by that. Some of it comes because they take for granted that we’re so successful year after year. But we’re doing just as much work and probably more than anybody else to get to that point. After that year, the coach of the team that wins the national championship automatically began being put on the (national) ballot whether they were Regional Coach of the Year or not and that changed some things."

Consistency has been one of Chamberlin’s strong points since arriving in Salisbury in 1987. Her teams have won less than 12 games in a season on only two occasions and Salisbury has posted only one sub-.500 season (1993 - 7-9) since her arrival. Sea Gulls teams have averaged almost 15 wins a season during her tenure, advancing to the NCAA postseason tournament in 18 of her 19 seasons at SU.

Although there has been success in the program year after year, Chamberlin says most of the pressure to continue the winning tradition comes from herself.

"There are not pressures from the institution, but there are certainly pressures that I put on myself and expectations that I have put on myself and that the players put on me and on themselves to be successful. We don’t want to go backwards.

"When you’re sitting as national champions for three years in a row, the only thing that is really going to equal that is winning it again. Eventually we’ll be displaced from that spot and that’s going to be a big bummer; but it’s something that’s bound to happen. But we strive to get back to that spot year after year and we strive to be the best team in the country."

Chamberlin knows that to be successful she must continue to do more than just recruit outstanding athletes. She knows she must motivate them and turn them into winners at the collegiate level. She’s made that effort year in and year out by fielding 39 all-Americans and 85 all-region players at SU. The Sea Gulls have also had the CAC Player of the Year in the past six seasons.

"I have the confidence that I know what to do as far as on the field skill work," she stated. "A lot more of (coaching) today is not the (teaching of the) skill aspect, but the mental aspect and getting the athletes to click. And getting them to be confident and, most importantly, believe in themselves as individuals and as a team is also very important. I think we work really hard on that aspect of it.

"The skill part is often easy, but it’s really getting them to believe in themselves. So there is a lot of confidence building and I think that contributes to our success. We’re a very close-knit team and we believe in each other like a family and that’s been the key to us being successful. Whether we’re national champions or not, that oftentimes depends on how the ball bounces. But we’re going to continue to be successful."

Now with three national titles and a pair of national coach of the year awards under her belt, Chamberlin has reached the pinnacle of her career.

"When I came to Salisbury University a couple of my goals were to win a national championship and to be recognized as the best coach in the country and I’ve achieved those goals. Now that I’ve reached those goals, I guess I need to re-evaluate those goals and go from there. I don’t want to put expectations on myself that are not in reach and certainly some of them require some luck and good fortune along the way.

"And I’ve been fortunate to accomplish some things I’ve wanted to accomplish in my career. The rest is a bonus from now on. Hopefully I can keep those bonuses coming."

Chamberlin Named Division III South Region Coach of the Year
December 5, 2005

SALISBURY, Md. - Dr. Dawn Chamberlin, head coach of the three-time defending NCAA Division III National Champion Salisbury University field hockey squad, has been named the 2005 Dita / National Field Hockey Coach Association NCAAA Division III South Region Coach of the Year, the association has announced.

Chamberlin, who already ranks among the most successful coaches in school history, ran her career record to 284-79-8 through 19 seasons with the Sea Gulls, including 80-5 over the past four seasons. The program has produced 39 national All-Americans - including four in 2004 and four more in 2005 - and 85 all-region players during her tenure. Salisbury has also dominated the Capital Athletic Conference, sweeping the conference's Player of the Year and Coach of the Year awards for the sixth straight year in 2005.

She recently completed her 19th season as SU once again successfully defended its NCAA title with a 1-0 win over Messiah College. The Sea Gulls posted a 21-1 record after completing a perfect 22-0 campaign in 2004 and claiming its second consecutive championship.

Chamberlin, who also registered her 250th career victory during the 2004 campaign, has been honored as the NFHCA's South Region Coach-of-the-Year six times, including 2005. She was also the 2004 NFHCA National Coach of the Year in Division III. She has also been named the Capital Athletic Conference's Coach of the Year in each of the past 11 seasons. She led her squad to an amazing streak of 45-straight CAC victories between 1996 and 2001.

In addition to three straight 20-win seasons, Chamberlin piloted the Sea Gulls to a school-record 44 straight wins over a three-season stretch. The latest championship and team records simply add to Chamberlin's long list of accomplishments with the Sea Gulls.

SU captured its 11th straight Capital Athletic Conference championship in 2005 and returned to the NCAA Championship Tournament for the 21st time in 22 years while also advancing to the final four for the ninth time.

Chamberlin is a 1985 graduate of the University of Iowa, where she was a four-year letterwinner on the highly successful field hockey team. The Hawkeyes won the Big Ten championship outright from 1981 to 1983, before sharing the top spot in 1984. The '84 squad finished second in the nation. Chamberlin, Iowa's co-captain as both a junior and senior, was also a member of the national indoor championship team and was selected to the All-Big Ten team during her senior year.

While at Iowa, she also received the Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Academic Award (1982-1985) and the Physical Education Academic Achievement Award (1983-1985). Chamberlin earned her Masters of Education from Salisbury in 1987 and her doctorate from the University of Maryland in 2000.

The 2005 Dita / NFHCA National Coach of the Year will be announced at the NFHCA Awards Luncheon to be held on Jan. 7, 2006 in Philadelphia.

Two Former Sea Gulls Named to NCAA 25th Anniversary Team
November 23, 2005

NCAA 25TH ANNIVERSARY DIVISION III SQUAD
SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury field hockey program, known as a national powerhouse in Division III, added to its tradition recently as two former athletes have been named to the 25th Anniversary Division III Field Hockey team. Jill Stewart, who played for the Sea Gulls from 1985 to 1988, and Erin Budd (pictured), who played from 2002 through 2004, were named to the 11-player squad.

Stewart came to Salisbury from Woodbury, New Jersey by way of West Deptford High School. In her four seasons with the Sea Gulls, she scored 41 goals and recorded 17 assists, good for 99 points. She stands eleventh on Salisbury’s career leaders in points, eleventh in goals scored, and tied for twelfth in assists.

In 1986, Stewart was part of Salisbury’s first-ever undefeated season with a 21-0 record. The team also defeated Bentley College, 2-1, and Bloomsburg, 3-2, in the playoffs to claim the NCAA Division III National Championship. In that season, Stewart was second on the team in scoring with 18 points. She was second in goals with 15 and tied for fifth in assists with three.

Stewart’s tenure at Salisbury was highlighted by her 1988 season. She served as a team captain and led the Sea Gulls to a 16-3-3 record and a third place finish overall in Division III. Stewart contributed 11 points on the season, scoring six goals and recording five assists. She was named a First Team All-American that season by the Penn Monto/College Field Hockey Coaches Association.

Budd joined the team in 2002 as a sophomore and made an immediate impact. She scored six goals and recorded 12 assists, good enough for 24 points in that first season. The following season, Budd established herself as an offensive force for the Sea Gulls.

In 2003, she scored 11 goals and recorded 15 assists, good for 37 points. She followed that season up with an even more impressive 2004 campaign, tallying 18 goals and 17 assists for 53 points. She was named to the First Team All-South region in both 2003 and 2004 and was named an NCAA All-American in 2004.

Budd’s contributions in 2003 and 2004 lead to Salisbury’s second and third Division III National Championships in school history. Like Stewart, Budd was part of an undefeated squad, as the Sea Gulls compiled a 22-0 record en route to title in 2004.

"Experiencing back to back National Championships is something that some people can only dream about," said Budd. "I’m so proud to be part of a team that has dedicated so much to get to the finals."

Their coach, Dr. Dawn Chamberlin, believes that the accomplishment is great for them and for the university. "I think that having two players chosen out of a team of eleven players is quite an honor - not only for (Stewart and Budd), but for our program overall," said Chamberlin, who was the NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year in 2004.

Chamberlin believes that the former Sea Gull players represented on the team were well deserved of the honor. "Erin and Jill were both amazing players for Salisbury University," said Chamberlin. "They were the type of player who makes an impact for the program, the university, and Division III field hockey.

"It certainly had to be a difficult task (to narrow down the team).  I think it is well representative of the great field hockey players that have been a force over the past 25 years."

Stewart is now married and lives in New Jersey. Budd is now an assistant on Coach Chamberlin’s staff, which claimed its third straight national title in 2005, the first Division III school to ever claim the field hockey title three straight years.

Sea Gulls Complete Three-peate With 1-0 Win Over Messiah
November 19, 2005

SALISBURY-MESSIAH BOXSCORE | SU TOURNEY GAME NOTES
FINAL FOUR SITE | NATIONAL FIELD HOCKEY BRACKET
LEXINGTON, Va. - Salisbury University became the first team in NCAA Division III history to win three consecutive field hockey national titles with a 1-0 win over Messiah College in the National Championship game on Saturday afternoon at Washington and Lee University’s Liberty Hall Field.

The Sea Gulls also set an NCAA record with their 12th consecutive victory in the NCAA Tournament.

"It's unbelieveable. This really hasn't set in yet - but wow!" said Salisbury Head Coach Dawn Chamberlin in referring to the Sea Gulls’ three straight national championships.

The Falcons controlled the play for most of the first half as they outshot Salisbury 11-4 and held a 7-2 edge in penalty corners, but they couldn't put any shots past Sea Gulls sophomore goalkeeper Maria Ramoundos (Gloucester, N.J./Highland) (pictured, left). Ramoundos’ ‘personal protector’ Sarah Tracey (Hampstead, Md./Hereford) (pictured, below) made two key defensive saves to preserve the scoreless tie at intermission.

In the second half, both defenses continued to dominate the game until Salisbury broke the scoreless tie when junior defender Sarah Tracey scored a goal off a penalty corner at the 40:09 mark. Senior forward Brittany Elliott (Delmar, Del./Delmar) assisted on the goal.

This was the only goal that the Sea Gulls needed as their defense shut down the Falcons offense in the second half.

Tracey and Kristina Holland (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) keyed SU’s defensive assault in the final 35 minutes. With numerous clears and saves, Salisbury appeared to keep Messiah frustrated. With about 15 minutes remaining, Tracey came up with another huge defensive save on a shot that had rolled by Ramoundos. Tracey batted the sure goal away at the last second, making her mark both offensively and defensively. With a collective effort, Messiah’s big scorers Jenna Schwind and Aftan Fisher were kept off the board.

"I think the second half was so much stronger than the first. We started dictating what was happening on the field," explained Chamberlin. "We were playing some really good defense and just wouldn't give up any goals. It was just a great defensive effort today."

Ramoundos helped the Sea Gulls defensive effort with her seven saves, while freshman goalkeeper Renee Herbster (Middleburg, Pa./Midd-West) stopped two shots for the Falcons.

Messiah outshot Salisbury, 17-12, and held a 12-6 edge in penalty corners.

With the win, the Sea Gulls concluded their season with a 21-1 record, while the Falcons finished 20-3.

Sea Gulls Headed Back to NCAA Championship Game, 3-2

LEXINGTON, Va. - Salisbury University claimed a spot in the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Game with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Ursinus College Saturday afternoon at Washington & Lee College. The Sea Gulls tied the record for most consecutive tournament wins at 11, and now have a chance to break that record and win their third straight national title - and fourth overall - in the process.

Salisbury (20-1) tied the win streak held by the College of New Jersey (1990-92).

Salisbury advances to Saturday's National Championship game, where it will face Messiah College. Messiah (20-1) recorded a 2-1 win over Bowdoin (18-1) in the first semifinal contest on Friday. Salisbury and Messiah have played once already this season, with the Sea Gulls taking the match by a score of 5-2. The NCAA Division III National Championship match is slated to begin at 1:00 pm. The title match will be broadcast live on the Internet.

The semi-final match-up between No.1 Salisbury and No.2 Ursinus (20-3) was a classic. For the first 20 minutes, neither team recorded a shot on goal. Like a heavyweight fight, the opponents were testing one another. After the initial early jitters, Salisbury and Ursinus put on a show.

The action started when Ursinus put a flurry of shots on Salisbury goalkeeper Maria Ramoundos (Gloucester, NJ/Highland). Ramoundos stopped all three attempts and met the Bears’ challenge the rest of the afternoon. Nearly ten minutes later, Salisbury had a rally of its own, but Ursinus goalie Jessica Lamina was also up to the task, stopping two shots from point blank range.

It wasn’t until 2:49 left in the first half that a goalkeeper would make a mistake. On a rebound left in front of the net, Megan Powell (Elkton, MD/Rising Sun) pounced and scored the opening goal. Salisbury held a slim 1-0 lead on the scoreboard at half, but the other statistics seemed to favor the Bears. Ursinus dictated possession through most of the first half, and they would shift strategy in the second half to counter the Sea Gulls.

Fortunately, an early penalty against Ursinus led to a corner for the Gulls and Danielle Twilley (Delmar, DE/Delmar) made the Bears pay. Salisbury ran a set play off the corner as Sarah Tracey (Hampstead, MD/Hereford) made a behind-the-back pass to Twilley, who blasted the shot past Lamina.

With a two-goal lead, Salisbury appeared to relax, and Ursinus never gave up. Just minutes later, Karen Wendler would score on a penalty corner assist from Kait Sutherland. The crowd and the Bears’ players fed off the momentum, and with 14:13 left in the game, Wendler and Sutherland hooked up again to tie the score at 2-2.

With the pressure back on Salisbury, the Gulls answered like a defending champion should. Less than a minute later, at 13:26, Ashley Twigg (Elkton, MD/Elkton) (pictured) banged an airborne ball into the cage, giving the Sea Gulls a much needed one-goal cushion. Twigg came off the bench to score only her third goal of the season, but it one proved to be a game-winner.

Down the stretch, Ursinus had several scoring opportunities, but with Ramoundos in goal and Tracey keying the SU defensive charge, the Sea Gulls denied all attempts to knot the score. Ramoundos finished with a season-high 13 saves, ten in the second half alone. Salisbury was out shot 21-12 and had five fewer corners than Ursinus, but the experienced Sea Gulls found a way to win.

Salisbury Head Coach Dawn Chamberlin is expecting a different meeting with Messiah this time around.

"I think this game is going to be very different from the last meeting," said Chamberlin. "The first game was played on grass and this one will be played on turf, which is to Messiah's liking. I think it's going to be a really good game."

LEXINGTON, Va. - Messiah College advanced to its fifth national championship game with a 2-1 win over Bowdoin College in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championships hosted by Washington and Lee University on Friday morning.

The game began with Bowdoin controlling play in the midfield and the Polar Bears assumed a 1-0 advantage just 8:35 into the game as senior defender Margaret Gormley (Chestnut Hill, Mass./Noble & Greenough) found
the cage off an assist from junior midfielder Taryn King (Georgetown, Mass./Brooks).

Messiah (20-2) began to take control at the 20:30 mark when senior midfielder Amber Fulginiti (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) scored on a rocket shot from the top of the circle. The ball darted past Bowdoin junior goalkeeper Kate Leonard (Eliot, Maine/Phillips Academy) and was the first goal the Polar Bears had allowed in four games.

Following the game-tying score, Messiah began to apply pressure on the Bowdoin defense and it took the lead for good as senior forward Jenna Schwind (Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington Christian) scored at the 40:56 mark off an assist from senior defender Ashley Lobach (Hanover, Pa./South Western).

"The win feels great," said Messiah Head Coach Jan Trapp. "You always want your team to win for the seniors and to have seven seniors this year and win is a great feeling. We showed our nerves in the beginning and after the first goal we just started playing better and better."

Messiah held advantages of 21-11 in shots and 13-9 in penalty corners. Leonard posted 11 saves in goal for the Polar Bears, while freshman goalkeeper Renee Herbster (Middleburg, Pa./Midd-West) recorded six stops
for the Falcons.

Bowdoin entered the semifinals as the only undefeated team in collegiate field hockey. The Polar Bears end their season with an 18-1 overall record. Messiah advances to tomorrow's championship game where it will look to claim its' first national championship. The Falcons will face two-time defending national champion Salisbury in the NCAA Division National Championship game Saturday at 1:00 pm.

Salisbury (19-1) will take on No.2-ranked Ursinus (20-2) in the NCAA Division III Field Hockey National Semifinals Friday at 2 p.m. at Washington & Lee University’s Liberty Hall Field, located in Lexington, Va. Salisbury controlled the momentum for much of the match against Rowan. The Sea Gulls held a 13-3 shot advantage in the first 35 minutes as the Gulls built a 3-1 lead at intermission. Junior Lynette Sgrignoli (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) (pictured) scored her 18th and 19th goals of the season to put SU up 2-0. Her first goal came off a rebounded missed attempt by sophomore Kristina Holland (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke). The second score of the day came when she deflected the ball on a pass from junior Tracey Lloyd (Delmar, Del./Delmar) and put the ball in the box for a 2-0 Salisbury lead just 19:22 into the contest.

Junior Megan Powell (Elkton, Md./Academy of the New Church) created a 3-0 bulge by the Sea Gulls when she scored an unassisted goal with 5:09 remaining in the first half.

Rowan, which was out shot 22-6 by SU after holding a distinct 27-8 advantage in shots in a 5-1 win over Skidmore on Saturday, didn’t quit, pulling within 3-1 with no time left on the clock at the end of the first half. After being awarded a penalty corner, the Profs were allowed to continue play despite the fact that the time had run out. Sophomore Corrine Monahan took a pass from sophomore Susan Massara and scored to keep RU within striking distance.

Salisbury, which held a 20-5 advantage in penalty corners, stretched the lead to 4-1 at the 59:01 mark when Lloyd scored her 11th goal of the season off a penalty corner.

SU sophomore goalie Maria Ramoundos (Gloucester, N.J./Highland) improved her season record to 15-1 with the win in goal. She finished with a pair of saves. Senior Stephanie Doherty (16-4) took the setback for the Profs despite finishing with 13 saves.

Rowan University Runs Past Skidmore College, 5-1, to Advance to Regional Final
November 12, 2005

SKIDMORE-ROWAN BOXSCORE | NCAA FIELD HOCKEY BRACKET
SALISBURY, Md. - No.5-ranked  Rowan University wasted no time asserting themselves in its Regional semifinal game against Skidmore College. The Profs, who received a first round bye, looked sharp as they jumped on Skidmore early and often to lead to a 5-1 victory.

Profs sophomore Danielle Miranda (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) scored on a deflection through traffic in front of the goal. Continued pressure by Rowan led to the second goal, scored by Sarah Wood (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East). Rowan was able to win possession as Wood thread a shot past Skidmore goalkeeper Stephanie Reed (Barker, NY/Barker).

Rowan scored its third goal of the first half goal at the 24:04 mark, as Colleen McGowan (Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) feathered a nice pass to Corrine Monahan (Belford, NJ/Middletown North), who connected for the goal.

Skidmore broke through in the second half on a deflection by Emily Clark (Saratoga, NY/Emma Willard) from a pass from Annie Ledyard (West Grove, PA/Lawrenceville). Sea Gulls Edge Catholic, 3-1, to Capture 11th Straight CAC Crown
November 5, 2005

SALISBURY-CATHOLIC BOXSCORE
SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury University extended its field hockey dominance over the Capital Athletic Conference by winning its 11th consecutive title at Sea Gull Field on Saturday.

The rematch of a highly competitive regular season game between Salisbury and Catholic did nothing to disappoint. Salisbury’s Sarah Tracey (Hampstead, MD/Hereford) (pictured) scored her second goal in as many games with a rifle shot that found the left corner of the cage. Tracey took the penalty corner pass from Brittany Elliott (Delmar, DE/Delmar), stopped it and blasted a goal all in one motion.

Tracey’s goal stood up until 19:42 left in the game when Catholic’s Jamie Punyko shoved a rebound past Maria Ramoundos (Gloucester, NJ/Highland) to even the score at 1-1. The next 13 frantic minutes featured eight penalty corners for Salisbury, yet the go-ahead goal eluded them. Sea Gull Head Coach Dawn Chamberlin substituted two forwards off the bench with fresh legs. Her move paid off when a rested Natalie Beck (Crofton, MD/Arundel) raced past Catholic defenders and placed a beautiful backhand pass in front of the goal for Brittany Elliott. All-American Elliott did not miss, giving the Sea Gulls a 2-1 lead and some breathing room down the stretch.

Salisbury did not allow another shot after Elliott’s goal, and the Sea Gulls added a goal with no time left  on a Megan Powell (Elkton, MD/Rising Sun) score. Salisbury held the advantage throughout most of the game, allowing only three shots on goal. After Catholic tied the game with 20 minutes remaining, the Sea Gulls stepped up their intensity and rallied for the win and the CAC Championship.

The Sea Gulls next action will be in the NCAA tournament. Their opponent will be determined tomorrow night as the field hockey tournament will be announced by NCAA. The #1 nationally ranked Sea Gulls will carry a 17-1 record into tournament play looking to capture a third straight national championship.

SALISBURY-CATHOLIC STATISTICS
WASHINGTON, DC - With a nation’s-best 43-game winning streak on the line and not having tasted a defeat in Capital Athletic Conference play in 19 contests, the No.1-ranked Salisbury University field hockey team trailed No.15 Catholic University 1-0 with three minutes remaining on Wednesday. But goals by junior Lynette Sgrignoli (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) and senior Brittany Elliott (Delmar, De./Delmar) brought the two-time defending national champions from behind, 2-1, in the nation’s capital.

Catholic took a 1-0 lead at the 17:47 mark when Erin Kelly, who had come off the bench, took a pass from Kyle Keating and put the ball in the box.

Sea Gulls Defeat CAC Foe York, 3-1
September 24, 2005

SALISBURY-YORK BOXSCORE
YORK, Pa. - The two-time defending NCAA Division III national champion Salisbury University field hockey team kept its NCAA-best winning streak alive at 41 games Saturday, but more importantly at the moment, stayed unbeaten in Capital Athletic Conference action Saturday with a 3-1 road win over York College. The Sea Gulls improve to 8-0 for the season, including 2-0 in the CAC. The Spartans, who lost to #11 Franklin & Marshall on Thursday, fall to 6-4 and 1-2 in the CAC.

The first half was well played by both sides as neither team was able to garner the early momentum. The Sea Gulls began to assert themselves as the first half wore on, slowly gaining control of the match. Salisbury got on the board with 10:08 left in the half as Brittany Elliott (Delmar, De./Delmar) collected a penalty corner and fired a pass to Megan Powell (Elkton, Md./Rising Sun) who converted the goal for the 1-0 lead.

Salisbury enjoyed a 7-2 edge in first half shots while they also had a 5-0 bulge in penalty corners.

The Sea Gulls came out of the half with fire and intensity, hitting the Spartans with a pair of goals less than 10 minutes into the half. Powell scored off a Lynette Sgrignoli (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) assist at the 29:47 mark and then completed her natural hat trick with a goal off a Tracey Lloyd (Delmar, Md./Delmar) pass with 26:47 remaining in the game. The hat trick gives Powell seven goals for the season.

The Spartans played hard all day and actually controlled the later stages of the game. York avoided the shutout with 12:21 remaining as Rachel Hilt (Mount Joy, PA/Hempfield) hit a corner to senior Rachel Lewis (Baltimore, MD/Perry Hall), who drove home the ball off a Salisbury defender for the goal. The Spartans had a few other scoring chances in the last ten minutes but would be unable to convert those chances into goals.

Senior Meg Eckenrode (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) was strong in goal for the Spartans as she notched seven saves. Maria Ramoundos (Gloucester, NJ/Highland) recorded six saves for the Gulls.

Salisbury outshot the Spartans 18-9 and also held a 13-5 edge in penalty corners.

The Sea Gulls will return to action Thursday when they host CAC opponent Goucher College at 4:30 p.m.
