Salisbury, MD – The third-ranked Salisbury University
field hockey team defeated defending national champion and sixth-ranked Cortland
State 3-1 on Sunday to advance to Friday's national semifinals.
Senior Jess Manzone, freshman Brittany Elliott and junior Lindsay
Elliott each scored for the Sea Gulls.
Sophomore Erin Budd had three assists.
The Gulls took a 1-0 lead into halftime on Manzone’s 14th
goal (22:19) of the season. An
early second half goal (37:45) by Brittany Elliott, her eighth of the season,
pushed the Sea Gull lead to 2-0. The
Red Dragons cut the deficit to 2-1 when freshman Jessica Seren scored
unassisted at 46:54. The Gulls
sealed the victory with less than five minutes to play when Lindsey Elliott
scored (65:30) her team-leading 20th goal of the season, on Budd’s third
assist of the game.
Salisbury junior goalie Melissa Taylor made seven
saves in the game, while Cortland senior goalie Erin Morris made three.
The Gulls had an 11-10 advantage in shots, while the teams were even with
10 penalty corners apiece.
With the win, Salisbury improves to 17-2 and earns its
second final four appearance in three years and sixth overall.
Cortland’s season ends at 15-4.
Salisbury will face No. 1 ranked Rowan in Friday’s national
semifinal game in Springfield, Massachusetts.
No. 4 ranked New Jersey will face No. 2 Messiah in the second semifinal
game.
