  SALISBURY WINS SIXTH STRAIGHT CAC FIELD HOCKEY TITLE
Sea Gulls (15-3) Face William Paterson (14-3) in NCAA Tournament on Saturday
NCAA Tournament Notes
This year’s 18-team field includes eight automatic qualifiers as conference champions. The Sea Gulls were one  of eight at-large selections.  All games in the single- elimination championship will be played on campus sites, with this week’s four regional winners advancing to the national semifinals and championship on November 11-12.

Salisbury State begins play in the 2000 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament this Saturday, November 4 against William Paterson in Annville, PA. A victory would move the Sea Gulls into Sunday's national quarterfinals against either Lebanon Valley (17-2) or Eastern Mennonite (16-4).

SSU in NCAA Play 
Salisbury State is making its 16th trip to the tournament in the last 17 years. The Gulls qualified for the NCAA Championship Tournament nine straight times from 1984-92 and have returned to the field for the seventh straight year after missing out in 1993.  The Sea Gulls won the national championship with a 21-0 record in 1986, and have advanced to the national semifinals on three other occasions: 1987, 1988 and 1992. Last year, Salisbury was eliminated in the first round, losing to Johns Hopkins 1-0 in penalty strokes. SSU is 19-15 all-time in NCAA Tournament games, including 11-4 in the first round.  SSU's 16 tournament appearances is tied for third highest in NCAA Division III history.

For the sixth straight year, Salisbury enters the NCAA Tournament as champion of the Capital Athletic Conference, although the CAC does not receive an automatic berth. The Gulls defeated York 6-1 in Saturday’s title match to extend their conference winning streak to 43-straight games. Junior Tara Webster led the way with three goals. The Gulls enter the NCAA Tournament riding a four-game winning streak and have won 11 of their last 12 contests. Sophomore Jill Cressor is the team’s leading scorer with 20 goals and 43 total points. Freshman Lindsay Elliott (12g-4a) is second on the team with 28 points, followed by junior Marie Brewington (9g-7a)  and Webster (9g-6a).  SSU averages 3.27 goals per game and has outscored opponents 59-19 this season. Junior Katie Richardson anchors a defense that has registered eight shutouts. Junior goalie Joanna Fenske has an .843 saves percentage and league best 1.05 goals against average.

Salisbury is 2-2 in games against the other teams in this year’s NCAA Tournament, with victories against Johns Hopkins (1-0) and New Jersey (2-0) and losses against Eastern Mennonite (2-1) and Rowan (2-1 ot). The Sea Gulls have never played William Paterson, but are 3-4-2 all-time against Mennonite and 2-1 all-time against Lebanon Valley.
