Six Field Hockey Players Garner Academic Honors
March 15, 2005

Salisbury, Md. - The Salisbury University field hockey team earned its second-consecutive NCAA Division III national championship on November 20, 2004, grasping supremacy on the field. Six members of the squad have now been recognized for their efforts in the classroom, posting grade point averages of 3.30 or above and being named to the Division III National Academic Squad, announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).

In addition, the Sea Gull squad as a whole was also recognized by the NFHCA, being named to a National Academic Team Award, which recognizes institutions that have achieved a team GPA of 3.00 or higher during the first semester of the 2004-05 year. Eighty-two Division III field hockey teams made the list.

Seniors Erin Budd (Delmar, DE/Delmar HS), Jess Dixon (Perryville, MD/Perryville HS) and Melissa Webster (Deal Island, MD/Washington HS), along with sophomores Abby Rowe (Elkton, MD/Elkton HS), Lynette Sgrignoli (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro HS) and freshman Maria Ramoundos (Gloucester, NJ/Highland HS) were honored by the association for their individual efforts, as well as the team as a whole.

In addition to her academic honor, Webster was named to the national All-American first team for the second straight year. She was a first team all-CAC performer, as well as conference Player of the Year and an All-South Region player. Webster scored 17 goals, tallied nine assists and 43 points for the season.

Budd was also named first-team national All-American and to the All-South Region first team by the NFHCA. The all-CAC performer was second on the Sea Gulls in points (53), while setting a new SU season record for assists (17), finishing as the team’s all-time leader in the category with 44.

Ramoundos posted a perfect 22-0 record in goal for Salisbury, giving up only 0.76 goals per game. She finished with 58 saves and 11 shutouts. Rowe was sixth on the team in scoring, sixth in shots and fourth in shot percentage. Sgrignoli was seventh in points and goals. Dixon was sixth on the team in assists in 2004.

The Sea Gulls are coached by Dawn Chamberlin, the NFHCA’s national Division III Field Hockey Coach of the Year in 2004. She led the Sea Gulls to a perfect 22-0 season this past fall. Salisbury owns a winning streak that spans 33 games heading into the 2005 season. In addition to the national championship in 2004, Salisbury captured its 10th straight Capital Athletic Conference championship. It was the 20th time the Sea Gulls had advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 21 years and the eighth Final Four appearance. Chamberlin has a career record of 263-78-8, including a 59-4 mark over the past three seasons. She was also the NFHCA Division III South Region Coach of the Year.
