Salisbury Wins 2003 NCAA Field Hockey National Championship
November 22, 2003

The Sea Gulls defeated Middlebury 4-1 in the National Championship Game in
Annville, PA to record their second national field hockey title and first since
1986. Sophomore Brittany Elliott (below, left) scored twice, freshman Tracey Lloyd and senior
Lindsey Elliott scored once, and junior Erin Budd (below right) and freshman Abbey Rowe
added assists. Salisbury controlled play throughout the game, outshooting
previously unbeaten Middlebury 18-10 and finishing with a 15-3 advantage in
penalty corner opportunities. Brittany and Lindsey Elliott were joined on the
all-tournament team by junior Melissa Webster and senior goalie Melissa Taylor.
Salisbury finished the year with a 20-1 final record and defeated the #5
(Messiah), #3 (New Jersey) and #1 (Middlebury) ranked teams in the nation during
the NCAA Tournament.
"This is great and words can't express how we feel," said Head Coach
Dawn Chamberlin. "We played lots of tough games this year and had a
difficult bracket against stiff competition in the tournament, so we really
earned it. It's a very emotional and overwhelming feeling to win the
championship. We've been so close so many times before and to finally break
through is very, very sweet."
