Salisbury blanks York to earn fifth straight shutout
SALISBURY, Md. -  The Salisbury University field hockey team posted its fifth straight shutout, 19th consecutive victory since October 9, 2005, with a 4-0 shutout over visiting York College in Capital Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.

Salisbury (9-0, 2-0 CAC) applied constant pressure in the offensive zone against York (3-5, 1-2) throughout the first half as the Sea Gulls posted two goals.

The first goal came from senior Lynette Sgrignoli on a clean pass from fellow senior Tracey Lloyd just 15 minutes into the game. Lloyd carried the ball inside the circle, after she dodged several defenders, and passed to Sgrignoli on the far post for the mark.

Lloyd would factor in the Sea Gull scoring less than seven minutes later when she rifled a shot past York goalie Claire Rekitzke (12 saves) for her first goal of the season. The midfielder had missed a penalty stroke minutes earlier.

Salisbury led 2-0 at the half as Rekitzke and York defenders Sarah Zimmerman and Chelsey Topper, both credited with a defensive save, kept the Spartans in the game.

In the second half, senior Megan Powell notched her 13th goal with a quick score off a corner at the 43rd minute. Powell improved her team lead in points scored to 32.

SU junior Lauren Dietz finished the scoring with her first goal of the year, at the 55th minute, on a shot around traffic in front of the crease. Junior Maria Ramoundos had a light day in goal as she did not face a Spartan shot to earn the win and shutout.

Salisbury goes on the road for two tough games this week as it travels to No. 7 Rowan on Tuesday, September 26, before facing No. 2 Messiah on Saturday, September 30. SU defeated Messiah, 1-0, in last year’s national championship game.
