Lion Tamers! SU takes down No. 1 TCNJ
SALISBURY
, Md. - The No.6 ranked Salisbury University field hockey team upset undefeated No.1 The College of New Jersey Saturday afternoon, 4-1.

Salisbury field hockey player Jami GobaoThe Sea Gulls (11-3) set the tone early when captain Megan Powell scored in the first minute of the contest. Powell added two more goals in the second half (39th, 57th minutes) to complete her hat trick. The senior forward now has 17 goals to lead the Gulls.

SU started the second half up 1-0 and wasted no time when freshman forward Lauren Correll assisted a Powell goal in the 39th minute past TCNJ goalie Erin Mitschke (seven saves) which extended the lead to 2-0.

The College of New Jersey (11-1) tried to mount a comeback with a goal by midfielder Melissa Buttray assisted by Kelly Mitchell in the 45th minute just over the reach of Salisbury goalie Maria Ramoundos (three saves).

The Gulls responded with two consecutive goals within three minutes to close out the Lions. Senior Lynette Sgrignoli added one of the final scores off a ricocheted shot as well as an assist on the other.

Salisbury’s gritty defense led by junior backer, Kortni Pedlow, halted the aggressive attack of New Jersey and only gave up one goal and five shots, far below TCNJ’s average of 24 shots and 4.7 goals per game.

Last season SU was 11-0 when they traveled to TCNJ and suffered its first and only loss en route to its third straight NCAA Division III national championship. This season The College of New Jersey was 11-0 before Salisbury returned the favor, spoiling an undefeated season.

The Sea Gulls look to continue their winning ways when they travel to Villa Julie to take on the Mustangs at 4 p.m., Tuesday, October 17.
