Streak Over! Rowan takes down Salisbury, 2-1
GLASSBORO, N.J. –
The 19-game winning streak is over for the Salisbury University field hockey team, the three-time defending NCAA Division III national champions, as the second-ranked Sea Gulls lost, 2-1, Tuesday afternoon to No. 9 Rowan on the road.

The Profs (6-2) were led offensively by Kiley Graham who scored both of Rowan's goals in the first half off tip-ins in front of the Salisbury cage.

Graham's first mark came at the 21st minute as she shot in the unassisted goal. The Sea Gulls (9-1) answered, three minutes later, off a penalty corner as Kristina Holland assisted junior Danielle Twilley for her third goal of the season.

Rowan regained the lead for good at the 29th minute as Susan Massara assisted Graham who beat SU goalie Maria Ramoundos (two saves) for the eventual game-winner.

Salisbury outshot Rowan, 12-4 in the second half, 17-8 for the entire game. The Sea Gulls also took nine corners in the second half, 12 total for the game, compared to the six total for the Profs.

Rowan goalie Amanda Cucinotti made six saves for the Profs to preserve the win.

The loss ends Salisbury's 19-game winning streak, dating back to October 11, 2005, which was the longest streak in Division III. Ironically, the 19-game winning streak began with a 4-2 victory over Rowan.

The Sea Gulls own the NCAA record of 44 consecutive wins from October 14, 2003 until October 9, 2005.

The last time Salisbury lost to Rowan was November 22, 2002 in the NCAA semifinals when the Profs won 3-2 in overtime. The Profs defeated the Sea Gulls twice that season as they won a 2-0 regular-season game. SU had beaten Rowan the past four meetings until today.

Salisbury will next face top-ranked Messiah College (7-0) on the road at 1 p.m., Saturday, September 30.

The Falcons swapped spots with the Sea Gulls in the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Coaches Poll that was released on Tuesday. Salisbury received the most first-place votes (26) compared to Messiah (24) but was edged out of the top spot by four total points, 988 to 984. The Sea Gulls had held the top spot for seven straight polls dating back to October 11, 2005 when they last were ranked No. 2 in the country.
