Sea Gulls complete Salisbury Invitational sweep
SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University field hockey team capped off the 2006 Salisbury Invitational with a 3-0 record as it defeated Eastern Mennonite University, 6-2, on Sunday afternoon at Sea Gull Field.

Salisbury (5-0), the three-time defending NCAA Division III national champions, faced a tougher challenge against EMU (3-2) after the Sea Gulls breezed through their first two games yesterday against Denison and SUNY Brockport where they outscored the two teams 17-0.

Senior forward Abby Rowe led the way offensively for the Gulls with two unassisted goals. SU had five different goal scorers as the Sea Gulls extended their winning streak to 15 games dating back to October 9, 2005.

Rowe's first goal came in the 13th minute when she picked up a loose ball at the top of the circle and blasted a shot past Royal goalkeeper Alyssa Borucki (17 saves) to give the Sea Gulls a 2-0 lead. Rowe later scored in the second half off a rebound at the 44th minute.

SU seniors Lynette Sgrignoli and Megan Powell both scored their eighth goals of the season, a team high. Sgrignoli scored a tournament high seven goals in three games.

Junior back Danielle Twilley scored her first goal of the season when she took a pass from Sgrignoli and banged a shot off the post into the cage with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. The Royals answered with a Lauren Michel goal with only 20 seconds left before the half to cut the Sea Gull lead to two, 3-1.

The Royals cut the Sea Gull lead in half, 4-2, on a Alyssa Derstine goal at the 47th minute.

Salisbury quickly responded as Powell and Lauren Correll combined to score and assist on the next two goals, in a two-minute span, to put the game away.

Maria Ramoundos picked up the victory in goal for the Gulls as she faced five EMU shots.

Salisbury beat Denison, 8-0, and SUNY Brockport, 9-0, yesterday to set-up its meeting with EMU, who was also undefeated in the invitational until this game.

The Sea Gulls return to action Wednesday, September 13 at 7 p.m. as they travel to Baltimore to face in-state rival Johns Hopkins University under the lights at Homewood Field.
