Chamberlin joins exclusive club with win No. 300
The Sea Gulls (16-3) advance to their 12th straight CAC championship game where they have won every title since joining the conference in 1995. SU will have to travel to top-seed Catholic University at 1 p.m., Saturday, November 4, as the Cardinals rallied on Wednesday afternoon to defeat No. 3 seed Mary Washington, 2-1. Salisbury freshman Lauren Correll scored a hat trick in the first half for the second straight game to lead the Sea Gull offense. Correll, the CAC Field Hockey Athlete of the Week, scored all three of her goals in a two-minute span. The day belonged to Chamberlin as the team presented their coach with several gifts after the game to mark the 300-win milestone. "It is an amazing accomplishment," said senior Megan Powell. "She is a very genuine person who is really dedicated to the program here." "She has been an awesome coach to me when I was a player. But she is more then a coach. She is a friend and mom to me," said Salisbury assistant coach Brittany Elliott. "It has been a pleasure to be on the sidelines with her this season. I wish her 300 more wins!" SU began the contest a bit shaky but junior goalie Maria Ramoundos (four saves) kept the game scoreless early with a couple big saves. As the first half wore on, the Sea Gulls started to accumulate a substantial advantage in penalty corners and shots. Finally, at the 28th minute Correll took over and scored two quick goals off deflections before she capped her hat trick with an unassisted goal, her 18th mark of the season. Senior Tracey Lloyd blasted home a shot from the top of the circle, off a penalty corner feed from Lynette Sgrignoli, to send the Gulls into halftime up 4-0. SU scored all four goals in a five-minute window.
St. Mary's (12-5) scored two second half goals as Kaitlin Anderson and Amanda Bramble broke through the Sea Gull defense and found the back of the cage. Junior Emily Richards made nine saves in goal for the Seahawks, who are coached by Megan Block a former two-time All-American at SU. Salisbury held a sizeable edge in penalty corners, 23-8, and outshot SMC by a similar number, 23-7. The Sea Gulls will now have the opportunity to avenge one of their three losses they suffered this season. Catholic defeated SU 1-0 here back on October 4. It was the first-time SU had lost at home in 72-straight games and the first conference loss suffered by the maroon and gold in over five years. "I hope we don't stop at 300," added Chamberlin.
