Salisbury
advances to 13th straight CAC championship game
SALISBURY, Md. -
The top-seed Salisbury
University field hockey team advanced to its 13th consecutive Capital Athletic
Conference championship on Wednesday night with a 3-0 victory over fifth-seed
University of Mary Washington under the lights at Sea Gull Stadium.
Salisbury, ranked No. 3 in the country, will seek to win its 13th straight CAC
title on Saturday afternoon against second-seed St. Mary's (Md.) College, who
defeated third-seed Wesley College, 3-2, in overtime in the other semifinal game.
The title game time is slated for 1 p.m.
The Sea Gulls (17-1) took advantage of their opportunities in the second
half with three unanswered goals. With just four minutes off the clock sophomore
Lauren Correll scored the game's first goal and her 20th of the season.
Six minutes later, SU drove into the UMW circle when an Eagle foul awarded the
Gulls a penalty stroke. Senior Danielle Twilley capitalized on the
opportunity as she knocked in her fifth penalty stroke goal of the season. Senior Ashley Twigg added
SU's final goal of the game with an unassisted mark with 14 minutes left in the game.
The Eagles (11-9) threatened to score in the waning minutes when senior Kortni
Pedlow made a great defensive play to preserve the shutout victory in front
of senior
goalie Maria Ramoundos (three saves). Ramoundos improved her season
record to a perfect 17-0.
Salisbury went into halftime knotted at 0-0 with Mary Washington. SU took seven
shots to UMW's two attempts and held a 9-2 advantage in penalty
corners. Eagle goalie Chrissy Bowdren (nine saves) made five saves in the first half to
prevent the Gulls from getting on the board.
SU is now 31-6 all time against the Eagles.
