Jones has produced six CAC Athletes of the Year (1999 and 2000, Suzy

In addition he has been recognized by his peers as CAC Coach of the Year
for men five times (2000, ’02, ’03, ’05, ’06) and women twice (’04, ’05).
Jones also has guided the men’s team to Maryland State Championship titles
in 2002, 2003 and 2005.
Jones, a
1991 graduate of Mount Union College, came to Salisbury after serving for
five years as the head coach for both cross country and track and field at
NCAA Division III Muskingum College in New Concord, OH. Prior to that, he
spent four years as an assistant cross country and track coach, with
two-year stints at Otterbein (OH) College and his alma mater.
In
addition to his duties with Cross Country, Jones is also the head coach
for men’s and women’s Track & Field. Jones has led the Sea Gulls to eight
CAC championships in the men’s division (1994, '95, '96, '98, '99, 2004,
'05, '06) and six straight second place finishes for the women.
A native
of Coshocton, Ohio, Jones is a 1991 graduate of Mount Union College, where
he was a four-year member of both the cross country and track and field
teams. Jones served as team captain of the cross country squad for three
seasons and was an NCAA national qualifier in cross country. He and his
wife Amy have a daughter, Hope, and a son, Ethan, and reside in Salisbury.
Over the
past seven seasons under Jones’ tenure, Salisbury has had 47 men and 27
women recognized as all-Capital Athletic Conference performers.
Additionally, Suzy McCulloch won the 1999 NCAA Mideast Regional
Championship and was awarded NCAA Mideast Athlete of the Year. She
finished 48th in the time of 17:48.2 for 5,000 meters at the 1999 NCAA
National Cross Country Championship during Jones' first season. Equally
important, the SU women's squad earned all-academic honors from the Cross
Country Coaches Association in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004, and the men’s
squad earned the same honor in 2004. Both teams’ cumulative grade point
averages consistently rank among the best in the nation.
Jones
served on the NCAA National Track and Field Committee from 2001-2005 and
as the Committee Chair from 2004-2005.
