MEN'S RESULTS |
WOMEN'S RESULTS
CARLISLE, Pa. - If Salisbury University
set out to make some noise at the NCAA Mideast Regional Meet, they accomplished
just that. The women’s team placed 6th among 42 teams while the men came in 15th
out of 40 schools.
The sixth place finish
by the women’s team was the highest in Salisbury’s history at NCAA Regionals.
Three Sea Gull runners received all-region awards for finishing in the top 35.
Glenna Sullivan (Phoenix, MD/Maryvale) led the way for Salisbury with a
21st place finish and a time of 23:23.4; Kelly Sullivan (Phoenix, MD/Maryvale)
came in 24th at 23:31.0 and Casey McInerny (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy)
finished just behind in 26th place. Salisbury’s team score was 202, just one
point behind Swarthmore College in fifth place.
In addition to
finishing sixth, Glenna and Kelly Sullivan were named to the freshman all-region
team comprised of the top seven freshmen runners. Glenna finished third, while
Kelly finished fifth among freshmen runners to make the team.
On the men’s side,
Scott Koehler (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) 43rd and Buck Stokes (Lothian,
MD/Southern) 45th had impressive times. Koehler finished in 27:14.2 and
Stokes was only two seconds behind. The men also have a talented, young core of
runners as three out of the five scoring runners were sophomores.
Only the top team in
the NCAA Mideast Regional qualifies for national competition. This year,
Haverford won on the men’s side and Dickinson College on the women’s side. With
continued improvement, Salisbury University aims to join these elite cross
country teams in the seasons to come.

Country Country Out to Set
New Marks at CAC Meet
November 2, 2005
SALISBURY, Md. - Despite perennial cross country success, Salisbury University
has never swept the Capital Athletic Conference Championship Meet, winning both
the men’s and women’s title. Head coach Jim Jones is ready to set the precedent.
"We want to win for a recruit that was seriously injured in an accident earlier
this year and we want to make history," Jones said.
On Saturday, the Sea
Gulls have two major obstacles standing in the way. The first is Mary
Washington. The Eagles bring the only teams in both men’s and women’s that could
challenge the Sea Gulls for the dual championships. UMW has two very good teams,
but Salisbury’s depth might be the key. In competition, only five runners score
from its squad. However, Jones explains, "Seven strong runners are vital because
#6 and #7 are displacers that can knock other teams back."
The second major hurdle
is the treacherous course facing each runner in Rockville, Md. Jones describes,
"This course has more hills - two major hills in the men’s race – and the
footing is rough and rocky."
Salisbury comes well
equipped for the terrain and the Eagles. Scott Koehler (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck)
has been burning the paths for the Men’s team. Jones emphatically praises,
"Scott never gives up. Never. He doesn’t care who (the opposing runners) are. He
just keeps coming at them."
Koehler also has a
realistic shot to make the national competition, according to Jones. A strong
supporting cast of Buck Stokes (Lothian, MD/Southern), Eric Graves
(Catonsville, MD/Catonsville), and Zach Dickerson (Elkridge, MD/Howard)
will closely follow the determined Koehler.
On the women’s side,
Salisbury University has several capable runners. Twins Glenna and
Kelly Sullivan (Phoenix, MD/Maryvale) and Casey McInerny (Elmira,
NY/Elmira Free Academy) have consistently finished among the leaders in each
race. The Sullivan sisters show improvement every week, and they have inspired
some other freshmen the keep striving. Amanda Hill (Ellicott City,
MD/Centennial) and Hannah Pfeifer (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville), both
freshmen, will be counted on to score for the Sea Gulls.
Cross Country rules
give every team the right to compete in the regional competition regardless of
conference results. However, Jones has laid down the challenge for his teams.
The only way he will take each 'team' to regionals is if they finish in the top
two at CACs.
The goals are set high
for the skilled Sea Gull teams and they are eager to respond. Running for an
injured friend, a shot at regionals and Salisbury University history, the CAC
Championship Meet promises to be a special event.
