Sea Gulls set personal records against tough competition at Tidewater Fall
Classic
The team to beat on the men's side, entering the meet, was 24th-ranked Mount Union College. Purple Raider runner Jeremy Velliquette blew away the field with a time of 25:10, 21 seconds better then the second place runner, to win the 8,000-meter race. The Purple Raiders couldn't hold onto the team lead as East Stroudsburg University had four runners in the top-10, including three runners that took second, third and fourth place. ESU won the meet with 32 points, seven better then second place Mount Union followed by Salisbury with 75. Salisbury junior Buck Stokes was the first Sea Gull across the finish line in the men's race as Stokes crossed with a personal best time of 25:46 (ninth place), almost a full minute better then his time in the Sea Gull Opener at the beginning of the season. Junior Eric Graves was right on the heels of Stokes, a second off the pace, to cross the line in 10th place (25:47). Senior Will Murdoch finished 12th with a time of 26:06. "I thought Buck and Eric ran extremely well," said Salisbury coach Jim Jones. "They have been working hard, like the entire team has. They are good students of how to race. They put a very good plan together and executed." The Sea Gulls had all 14 of their men's runners finish in the top 46 spots. "I have never had all of our guys run at 28 minutes or faster. As a whole we have never had a group run that fast," said Jones. Towson University placed three runners in the top-10 of the women's 6,000-meter race as the Tigers compiled 47 points to win first place. Salisbury had 63 team points followed by Mount Union, in third place, with 74 points. Sea Gull sophomores Glenna and Kelly Sullivan paced the women's team as Glenna shaved a 1:05 off her time in the Sea Gull Opener to take second place with a time of 21:52. Kelly was right behind her twin sister as she crossed the finish line at 21:58 in fourth place. Salisbury had eight runners in the top 31 spots and five runners in the top 23 spots. "I think we are really running well up front," said Jones. "All of the women improved which is what we wanted. We still we have to close those gaps down between one and five." Towson runner Britta Nelson finished in first place with a time of 21:42. Bryn Mawr College Katie Weng took third place finishing neck-and-neck with Glenna Sullivan at 21:52. Salisbury will be off next weekend before heading north to participate in the DeSales Invitational at 10 a.m., Saturday, October 14. NOTE: This is the last year the Tidewater Fall Classic will be known by that title. The name will change to the Don Cathcart Invitational starting next season. Dr. Cathcart has devoted close to 40 years of service to the Salisbury cross country program. "Dr. Don Cathcart has been very important for the history of our program at SU. Without his support, close to 40 years, we wouldn't be where we are," said Jones. "I just feel he should be recognized for his contributions to the program. This was an appropriate way to honor him and his contributions." Also in the men's race there was a team of five Salisbury University alumni runners who came in fourth place overall with 146 points. Scott Koehler, last year's Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year, finished in fifth place with a time of 25:39.
