Salisbury is making its 10th overall and fifth straight appearance in the NCAA
Tournament, and its second appearance in the championship round (World Series).
The Sea Gulls bring a 22-18 all-time NCAA Tournament record into Friday’s
opening game. *
Salisbury eclipsed the 30-win plateau for the fifth straight year in 2004 and
registered its 10th straight season with at least 20 wins. *
Salisbury claimed its fifth CAC baseball championship in 2004, defeating Mary
Washington 8-0 and 4-3 in the championship doubleheader on April 17. * Doug
Fleetwood, now serving in his fourth year as head coach at Salisbury, brings
a career record of 131-50-6 (.717) into the 2004 NCAA Tournament. Fleetwood has
been named the CAC Coach of the Year in each of his four seasons. *
Williams was joined on the all-tournament team in Martinsville by sophomore 1B Nick
Pegelow, sophomore 2B Greg Lemon, junior C Matt Johnson and
junior OF/P Jason Lively. *
The Sea Gulls finished with 51 runs and 64 hits in the four regional games, as
well as a team batting average of .428. SU’s 21 runs and 24 hits against Mary
Washington in game #2 were both season highs. *
Salisbury brings a .345 team batting average into the World Series after raising
the average 10 points during the Martinsville Regional. *
The All-Region honor was the second postseason award for Pegelow,
who was also named the 2004 Capital Athletic Conference’s Player of the Year.
Pegelow was SU’s only All-CAC first team selectee. Other Sea Gulls named to
the all-conference second team were Lemon, Lively, Kassekert
and Lasinski. *
Pegelow was also one of 11 players selected to the 2004 CoSIDA Academic
All-District 2 College Division Baseball First Team. He is a candidate for the national Academic All-America
baseball team. *
The pitching staff enters the World Series with a 3.73 team ERA, and has four
players with at least five wins apiece this season. Lasinski’s 11 victories is
the most by a Sea Gull hurler since Mike O’Donnell’s 10-2 mark in 1985. The
SU season record is 12 wins (by Brian Brushe in 1977.) | ||||||||||||||||
