The Sea Gulls carry a two-game winning streak into this weekend’s Tri-State Tournament at home. Salisbury blanked Chowan 1-0 on Wednesday and downed Wesley 12-2 on Thursday to improve to 5-2 overall.

Freshman outfielder Alex Vitale and senior infielder Trey Cobb had three hits apiece to lead the Gulls at Wesley. Vitale finished with three RBIs in the game, while Cobb finished with two doubles and two RBI.

Salisbury had a season-high of six extra-base hits in Thursday’s contest, although the Sea Gulls have yet to hit a home run through seven games.

Junior RHP Greg Lasinski allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings against Wesley and improved to 2-0 on the year with the victory. Sophomore RHP Eric Bush closed the game with two innings of no-hit work while making his second appearance of the season.

The Sea Gull pitching staff brings a combined 2.37 earned run average into this weekend’s games.

Sophomore 1B Nick Pegelow, whose RBI single provided the only run in Wednesday’s victory, finished 2-for-4 at Wesley and has assumed the team lead with a .385 average. Senior DH Rob Kassekert is second on the squad with a .379 average, and leads the Gulls with four doubles, six RBI, and 15 total bases.

Four other players - Vitale, Trey Cobb, BJ Kittle and Jason Lively - sport averages of .300 or better entering the Tri-State Tournament. The Sea Gulls have a team batting average of .300 (66-for-220).

Pegelow, Kassekert and sophomore 2B Greg Lemon are the only players to have started all seven games to date.

Now serving in his fourth-year as head coach, Doug Fleetwood needs one victory to register his 100th career win with the Sea Gulls.

Eastern Connecticut State enters the Tri-State Tournament as the #1 ranked team in the ABCA Division III Top 25 national poll. Salisbury and Montclair State were among the teams “also receiving votes” in the preseason poll.

Salisbury lost both meetings with Eastern Connecticut last year, falling 4-3 and 7-4. The Sea Gulls won two of three matchups with Montclair in 2003, losing 7-5 at home before sweeping a late-season doubleheader at Montclair, 12-9 and 16-4.
