Lemon Named First Team
All American
May 30, 2006
SALISBURY, MD – Salisbury senior shortstop Greg Lemon (Wilmington, DE/St.
Mark’s) was named a 2006 ABCA Division III Baseball First Team All American
on Saturday, May 29. Lemon was joined by eight other South Region players who
were also honored.
Lemon was the team leader in virtually all
the major statistical categories. Starting all 47 of the Salisbury games this
year, Lemon accumulated a .410 batting average, with 75 hits and 61 runs scored,
which is a single season school record. Not only did he lead in these
categories, but as a lead off hitter he led the Sea Gulls in slugging percentage
(.639), doubles (17), triples (5), homeruns (5),
stolen bases (24 of 26), and total bases (117).
In addition to Lemon’s
success in the 2006 campaign, his career numbers have been nothing short of
amazing. A career .372 batter, Lemon has piled up 240 hits, good enough to be
second all time as a Sea Gull. In his four years as a Gull, Lemon has been
responsible for a school record 193 runs. His 95 base on balls also sits him
number one as a Sea Gull in that category.
One of Lemon’s most
outstanding achievements on the season is his school record 23 game hit streak.
Beginning on April 1st, the record streak went to the end of the
season where Lemon and the Sea Gulls were eliminated from the Regional
Tournament. The previous record was an 18 game hit streak, but on May 5, Lemon
doubled to lead off game two of a doubleheader against Methodist College to
break the record.
This season, Lemon was
also named to the NCAA South Region All Tournament team and was a first team
Capital Athletic Conference selection.

right field to score pinch-runner Tim Barnshaw (Dayton, NJ/South Brunswick) for
the second run of the inning. The Profs would add one more run on a bases loaded
single by Counard.

Salisbury Claims CAC
Title, Defeats York, 6-2
April 23, 2006
SALISBURY-YORK BOXSCORE
SALISBURY, MD - The fourth ranked Salisbury University baseball team captured
the 2006 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament Championship by defeating York
College 6-2 Sunday afternoon at Sea Gull Field. Junior starting pitcher Bryan
Brainer (Chester, MD/Kent Island) threw a solid five and a third innings,
while allowing only two earned runs to pick up his fourth win of the year. The
Championship is Salisbury’s fourth CAC title in six years since Coach Doug
Fleetwood has been head coach.
The Sea Gulls got some
help early from York as senior shortstop Greg Lemon (Wilmington, DE/St.
Mark’s) reached on an error and advanced to second to leadoff the game. With
one out, junior Colin Kraus (Easton, MD/Easton) smoked a single up the
middle scoring Lemon from second giving Salisbury a 1-0 first inning lead.
Brainer was
dominating in the early innings. He struck out three batters and recorded three
ground ball outs through two innings. Salisbury got more help from the Spartans
when junior Brian Theibault (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) lined a pitch
that was dropped by the first baseman. Junior outfielder Andrew Jensen
(Millersville, MD/Severna Park) followed with a single. With two outs and
the bases loaded, Lemon delivered with a single to center scoring
Theibault and Jensen giving Salisbury a 3-0 lead.
In the third senior
first baseman Nick Pegelow (Seaford, DE/Seaford) walked with one out and
was safe at second when junior third baseman Alex Vitale’s (Severna Park,
MD/Severna Park) sacrifice bunt was fielded by the pitcher and thrown into
center field. Theibault capitalized on the mistake by hitting a rocket into
center field scoring Pegelow. After and intentional walk and a strike
out, sophomore Mark Bostwick (Elkton, MD/Elkton) capped the inning with a
line drive single to right scoring Vitale and Theibault for the
6-0 lead.
Brainer got into
a little trouble in the fifth after a walk was followed by a home run to make
the score 6-2. Junior Dan Oleynik (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) came in to
relieve Brainer with one out and two on in the fifth. Oleynik
ended the threat after fielding a grounder up the middle to start a 1-6-3 double
play.
Oleynik was
dominate on the mound with his relief work. In the seventh Spartan hitters could
not touch his mixture of pitches as he struck out all three batters. In the
ninth, the lefty got a weak ground ball out for the first of the inning. After a
single, Vitale made a fantastic play moving to his left and forcing the
runner at second on the throw. Oleynik ended the game in a fitting
fashion on a 0-2 breaking ball to clinch the championship.
Salisbury takes the
field next against non-conference opponent Wesley College in Dover on Wednesday
April 26th at 3pm.

by Cole at the first base position. Callahan then delivered with an RBI single
to give the Sea Gulls the 10-5 advantage going into the bottom of the inning.

Townsend delivered a two-run single and Anderson added an RBI single to pull
within two runs, 10-8. Reliever Dan Oleynik (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills)

Sea Gulls Rally Past Chowan
College, 3-2
April 14, 2006
SALISBURY-CHOWAN BOXSCORE
SALISBURY, MD - Sea Gull first basemen Nick Pegelow (Seaford, DE/Seaford)
singled home fellow senior Greg Lemon (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark’s) in the
bottom of the ninth inning Friday afternoon to give Salisbury the 3-2 win over
the visiting Braves of Chowan University. The win moves the Sea Gulls to 27-5 (CAC
8-2) on the year while dropping Chowan to 19-15.
Salisbury, who has
recently been named the #1 seed for the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference
tournament, was playing its final tune up game before the CAC’s begin. The
decision by Coach Fleetwood was to go pitcher by committee, using Salisbury’s
three ace pitchers, Bryan Brainer (Chester, MD/Kent Island), Ryan Bennick
(Wind Gap, PA/Nazareth Area), and Nick Dunk (Seaford, DE/Seaford).
Each pitcher went three innings, but it was Dunk who picked up the win,
improving his season record to 7-2.
Chowan struck first in
the top of the third inning, as Brave second basemen Joey Ryder led off
with a single off of Brainer. Ryder advanced all the way to third base on the
next two pitches, one being a wild pitch and the second a passed ball.
Bryant Cooke then grounded out to second base, scoring Ryder on an unearned
run. Brainer finished the afternoon allowing only two hits and issuing one free
pass in his three innings of work.
The Braves scored again
in the top half of the fifth inning with Ryder crossing the plate once again.
After Bennick recorded an out, he walked Ryder which brought up Cooke. A
picture perfect hit-and-run allowed Ryder to advance to third where he was later
sacrificed home on a fly ball by Joel Ortiz.
Trailing 2-0 going into
the bottom half of the fifth, the Sea Gulls were quick to get on the board. It
took only one swing by shortstop Lemon who belted a solo homerun over the
right-center field fence. The homerun was Lemon’s fourth of the year and it cut
the Brave lead in half.
Two innings later the
Gulls would strike again. This time it came from the bat of junior Andrew
Jensen (Millersville, MD/Severna Park) who hit his second homerun of the
season to tie the game at two. Salisbury had an opportunity to break the game
wide open, but Colin Kraus (Easton, MD/Easton) would ground to short and
leave three runners stranded.
With the score knotted
at two in the eighth inning, the Braves had a chance to take the lead.
Brandon Hamlett drew a walk from Dunk and advanced to second on a slow
roller to the shortstop. With two outs and first base open, Dunk intentionally
walked Matt Dize to bring up Mike McConnell. McConnell singled to
leftfield which looked as if it would score Hamlett from second. Jason
Lively (Gambrills, MD/Arundel) came up with the ball and threw a strike from
mid-leftfield to catcher Pete Callahan (Newark, DE/Newark) who applied
the tag on Hamlett to record the third out of the inning.
The ninth inning saw
Chowan leave three runners stranded on base and the Sea Gulls take advantage of
the mishap to score the game winning run. With one out, Lemon walked and
advanced to second on a controversial sacrifice bunt from Lively. Kraus was
intentionally walked to put a force out at all three bases, but a passes ball
advanced Lemon and Kraus one base. With two out, two on and a full count,
Pegelow singled through the left side of the infield to score Lemon and give the
Sea Gulls the win.
Dunk finished the
afternoon with one strikeout, four walks but allowed zero runs. Jensen and
Lemon led the Gulls offensively hitting 3-4 and 2-3 on the day respectively.
The Sea Gulls will host
the Bison of Gallaudet University on Tuesday, April 18th in game one
of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. The game is scheduled for a 3:30
p.m. start from Sea Gull Field.

Salisbury Outlasts York
College in Slugfest, 14-12
March 29, 2006
SALISBURY-YORK BOXSCORE
SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University baseball team (20-4, 2-1 CAC)
out-slugged the Spartans (10-8-1, 3-2 CAC) to post its 20th win of the season.
The #13 ranked Sea Gulls jumped on York early and held on to beat their Capital
Athletic Conference foe.
Salisbury scored seven runs in the first
inning off York starter, Chris Brower. After a Greg Lemon (Wilmington, DE/St.
Mark’s) line-out to right, the next eight Salisbury batters reached base. A
two-run double by Pete Callahan (Newark, DE/Newark) was the big blow in
an inning that York committed two costly errors. The Spartans could never fully
dig themselves out of the first-inning hole, but they did manage to rally to
keep the game close.
P.J. Valenza hit a solo homer in the top of
the second, but Salisbury responded by scoring two more runs in the bottom half
of the inning off a two-run single by Andrew Jensen (Millersville, MD/Severna
Park), giving SU a 9-1 lead. Jensen swung a hot bat all afternoon as he went
4-6 with two runs and four RBI.
As the game looked all but over, York scored
five runs in the third off Sea Gull starter Drew Campbell (Hillsborough,
NJ/Hillsborough). The offensive explosion would continue with both teams
putting big numbers on the scoreboard. Salisbury scored four runs in the bottom
of the fourth, answered by York’s two in the fifth and three in the seventh. The
teams combined for 32 hits, 15 walks and six wild pitches in what was nothing
near a pitcher’s duel. However, Salisbury did get two and a third scoreless
innings from reliever Tom Howell (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) as he
notched his second save.
York used seven different pitchers in the
game. Brower took the loss, dropping him to 5-1. Nick Dunk (Seaford,
DE/Seaford) picked up the win for Salisbury, grinding through four-plus
innings. But the day belonged to the hitters. Matt Foster (Baltimore,
MD/Cardinal Gibbons) went 4-5 with three runs and an RBI, Callahan had three
RBI on two hits and Nick Pegelow (Seaford, DE/Seaford) had two hits and
two runs. Salisbury second baseman Randy Boyle (Jarrettsville, MD/John
Carroll) added two hits in four at-bats with an RBI.

same Spartans on Saturday as SU travels to York for a CAC rematch.
