Hampden-Sydney Heading For First-ever World Series, 16-7
May 22, 2005

CHAMPIONSHIP BOXSCORE | RESULTS / ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Salisbury, MD - Hampden-Sydney's baseball team scored a season high 16 runs to go with a season high 25 hits en route to defeating Ferrum College, 16-7, in the championship contest of the 2005 NCAA Division III Baseball Salisbury Regional, earning the team's first-ever bid to the Division III College World Series in the process. With the win, the Tigers improve to 27-13 overall and extend their season-best winning streak to nine games.

Hampden-Sydney's John Schoenholtz (Dhahran, Saudia Arabia/McCallie) pitched seven and one-third innings and allowed one run on five hits while walking two and striking out four as he ran his record to 11-1 on the year.

Meanwhile, all nine hitters in the Tiger lineup had at least one hit, led by John Apperson (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) who each had four hits, while Apperson, Harrell, Luke Brankley (Onancock, VA/Nandua), Mike Clark (Kinsale, VA/Washington and Lee) and Jason Bour (Centreville, VA/Westfield) each drove in three runs.

The Tigers scored in each of the first four innings, including eight runs in the fourth when the team sent 14 batters to the plate and recorded the eight runs on eight hits to break the game wide open.  Trailing 16-1, Ferrum rallied with six runs in its half of the ninth inning to make the final Tiger advantage nine runs.

The Panthers were paced by Brent Sowers and Jesse Bowles, who each went 3-for-5 with a run scored and one RBI, while Brett Thomas collected two hits and scored the team's first run of the contest in the fourth inning.

Meanwhile, pitcher Ryan Cooper took the loss after working three and two-third innings and allowing 12 hits and nine runs (four earned) to go with one strikeout and two walks.

Five members of the Hampden-Sydney squad earned all-tournament honors, including John Schoenholtz, John Apperson, Luke Brankley, Todd Harrell and Jayson Hanky, while Brent Sowers, Ryan Cooper and Kasey Harmon represented Ferrum College, Brandon Cole and Kevin Foeman represented Mary Washington and Andrew Jensen represented Salisbury.

Hampden-Sydney, the first-ever Old Dominion Athletic Conference program to advance to the Division III College World Series, will return to action Friday, May 27, in the first round of action in Appleton, WI.

Ferrum Battles Back to Knock off Mary Washington, 6-5
May 21, 2005

Salisbury, MD - No.3-seed Ferrum College went to its bullpen Saturday night and received the help it needed as the No.20-ranked Panthers eliminated No.2 seed and seventh-ranked University of Mary Washington, 6-5, in the second day of action at the 2005 NCAA Division III Salisbury Regional Baseball Tournament.

The victory completed the surprising elimination of the top two seeds in this tournament as top-seed Salisbury was knocked out by UMW, 6-2, earlier in the day. The Panthers (22-13-1) will now move on to the championship Sunday at Salisbury’s Arthur W. Perdue Stadium to face the surprising No.4-seed Hampden-Sydney Tigers. Hampden-Sydney (26-13) is now the only unbeaten team in the tournament and Ferrum will have to beat the Tigers twice on Sunday to claim the Regional title and earn the right to move on to the NCAA Division III World Series in Appleton, Wis. May 27-30.

When Ferrum starting pitcher Casey Davenport began to tire after five innings on the hill, Panthers’ skipper Abe Naff didn’t hesitate going to his bullpen. Davenport had given up four runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out three and walking one. In came Daniel Reynolds, who gave up just one run on two hits while striking out a pair and walking one in two frames. Naff then decided Jimmy Holm should get some work and Holm (3-0) picked up the win. He did not allow a hit, and the Ferrum offensive score one run in the eighth and another in the ninth to come from behind to defeat the Eagles.

Mary Washington starter Nathan Harman (3-2) took the loss despite going the distance. In nine innings he allowed six runs (four earned) on nine hits while walking two and striking out four.

Panther third baseman Brett Thomas did the most damage for Ferrum. He finished 2-for-5, connecting with his 11th double of the season. He also scored a pair of runs. Catcher Nick Baker went 2-for-4 drove in a run and recorded a pair of hits, and center fielder Brent Sowers went 2-for-5 with a RBI.

Mary Washington’s Eric Fitzgerald led the Eagles with a 2-for-5 outing, including one run scored. Left fielder Mike O’Donnell added a pair of hits, while tagging his ninth double of the year while driving in a run.

Mary Washington Eliminates Host-Salisbury From Tourney, 6-2
May 21, 2005

Salisbury, MD - The University of Mary Washington had a mastery over the Salisbury University baseball team in 2005. After two regular season victories over the Sea Gulls and two more wins over SU to claim the Capital Athletic Conference championship, redemption would have been sweet in the first elimination game of the 2005 NCAA Division III Salisbury Regional Baseball Tournament. But two big innings by the Eagles proved to be the difference as UMW moved on and sent the Sea Gulls home with a 6-2 setback.

No.7-ranked Mary Washington (27-10) advanced to take on No.20 Ferrum College (23-13-1), who took its first loss earlier in the day, a 6-2 setback to Hampden-Sydney (26-13). H-S is now the only unbeaten team in the tourney and will move to the championship of the tournament Sunday at 12-noon. Ferrum eliminated Mary Washington, 6-5, in the late game Saturday. No.12-ranked Salisbury finishes the season with a 28-9-2 record.

This contest started out as a pitchers’ dual as Salisbury senior Scott Byers (Oakton, VA/Oakton) and Mary Washington sophomore Dylan White (Mineral, VA/Louisa) combined to allow only two hits in the first four innings. But the fifth and sixth frames were the difference as the Eagles scored six runs on eight hits while taking advantage of two Sea Gull errors.

White (8-3) then did the rest as he finished with a five-hit complete game victory. He allowed two runs, while striking out four and walking three.

Byers (4-1) took the setback for Salisbury. He worked five-plus innings, giving up six runs on seven hits while walking two and fanning six.

UMW first baseman Brandon Cole (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) led the Eagles’ offensive attack, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Left fielder Eric Fitzgerald (Linwood, NJ/Mainland Regional) went 2-for-5 with a run scored and freshman Jeff James (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown), playing in just his seventh game of the season, went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a double from his ninth spot in the lineup.

Salisbury, which couldn’t get untracked offensively in either game of the tournament, finished with only five hits while committing two errors defensively. Sea Gull right fielder Jason Lively (Gambrills, MD/Arundel) led the Gulls, finishing 2-for-3, with his seventh double of the season.

"We really didn’t hit the ball well in the conference tournament and again here (at the Regional tournament)," SU Head Coach Doug Fleetwood said. "It’s a shame that you work so hard to get to this point in the season and then don’t get the job done once you get here. But we haven’t been able to get the job done against (Mary Washington) all year long and they deserve to move on."

Salisbury took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when left fielder Mike Williams (Baltimore, MD/Towson) led off with a walk and stole second. He then scored when shortstop David Sutton (St. Michael’s MD/St. Michael’s) sliced a single up the middle.

But the lead didn’t last past the fifth frame as the Eagles scored two runs on two hits to take the lead for good. Catcher Lee Rubin (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) was hit by a pitch to start the frame. Cole followed with a double down the left-field line and both runners crossed the plate on James’ hard hit double to left.

Four more runs crossed the plate on six hits by Mary Washington in the sixth frame. The Sea Gulls didn’t help their cause by committing a pair of errors.

Hampden-Sydney Advances to Title Game, 6-2
May 21, 2005

Salisbury, MD - Hampden-Sydney’s baseball team advanced into the championship game of the 2005 NCAA Division III Baseball South Regional Tournament thanks to a 6-2 victory over Ferrum College Saturday afternoon at Arthur Perdue Stadium. With the win, the Tigers improve to 26-13 overall, while Ferrum drops to 22-13-1 overall and will play the winner of the Mary Washington/Salisbury game at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Tiger junior pitcher Jayson Hanky (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) picked up his fourth win of the season as he worked six and one-third innings and allowed just one run and five hits while striking out three and walking two.  Sophomore Larry Greene (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) worked the final two and two-third innings and allowed just two hits and one run en route to picking up his first career save.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Ferrum’s Quincy Davenport was driven in by a Brett Thomas triple to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.  The Tigers answered with a three-run seventh in which the first five batters in the inning recorded singles, including John Apperson (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) who drove home Luke Brankley (Onancock, VA/Nandua) before Chris Padgett (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) laced a two-run single up the middle to plate Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch) and Apperson.

Ferrum loaded the bases in its half of the seventh with just one out, but Larry Greene came on and struck out Quincy Davenport looking before coaxing a flyout by Brent Sowers to get the Tigers out of the jam.  The Tigers then came back with three more runs in the top of the eighth after Luke Brankley and Jay Lilley each reached on singles, with Lilley driving in Brankley, while John Apperson ripped his second triple of the game to plate Brankley and later scored a run of his own on Chris Padgett’s sacrifice fly.

The Panthers managed a final run in the bottom of the ninth after Jesse Fuller tripled and then scored on a Tiger error, making the final margin four runs at 6-2.

Ferrum pitcher Jesse Bowles took the loss after giving up three runs on nine hits through six innings of action.  Randall Stevens gave up four hits and three runs in two innings of relief work while B.J. Durham worked the ninth and did not allow a hit or run.

Hampden-Sydney, which extended its record for victories in a season to 26 and moved its season-high winning streak to eight games, will be looking for its first-ever Division III College World Series appearance with a victory Saturday at 12 pm in the regional final.

Hampden-Sydney Scores Second Upset of Salisbury Regional, 4-0
May 19, 2005

Salisbury, MD - The Salisbury University baseball team came into the NCAA Division III Salisbury Region Baseball Tournament as the top seed, which should have given the No.12-ranked Sea Gulls an advantage going in. But it was unranked and fourth-seeded Hampden-Sydney which had the momentum Thursday afternoon as the Tigers slammed out 10 hits en route to a 4-0 shocking of the SU at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

The loss leaves Salisbury (28-8-2) in the losers’ bracket and in a must-win situation Friday when the Sea Gulls take on No.2-seed and seventh-ranked University of Mary Washington, which was upset by No.3-seed Ferrum, 4-0. Salisbury and UMW (26-9) will tangle in an elimination game at 3 p.m., while Hampden-Sydney (25-13) will take on Ferrum (22-12-1) at 11 a.m. The loser of the Ferrum-Hampden-Sydney game will take on the Salisbury-Mary Washington winner in another elimination game at 7 p.m. Friday. The championship contest is slated for 12-noon on Saturday.

The Tigers’ junior John Schoenholtz (10-1) started shakey, but worked himself out of a jam in the opening stanza and then settled in to toss an eight-hit shutout. He struck out seven and walked just two Salisbury batters as he went the distance.

Salisbury ace senior Greg Lasinski (7-2) was saddled with the setback. He surrendered four runs (three earned) on 10 hits while walking two and fanning four in nine innings.

There was only one extra-base hit in the game. Hampden-Sydney’s Joe Knowles picked up his fifth double of the season as he finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Catcher Jason Bour went 2-for-4 with one run scored, right fielder John Apperson went 2-for-4 and shortstop Jay Lilley also had a pair of hits.

Sea Gull center fielder Andrew Jensen went 3-for-4 from his No.2 spot in the lineup. Second baseman Greg Lemon and first baseman Nick Pegelow both finished 1-for-3 and DH Matt Johnson, catcher B.J. Kittle and third baseman Alex Vitale each chipped in one hit.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when second baseman Mike Clark singled to lead off the inning. He moved to second on a single by Bour and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Knowles. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Todd Harrell.

A costly Sea Gull error in the top of the sixth frame resulted in a three-run barrage by H-S. Bour singled and later scored on a fielding error by SU’s David Sutton. Burk who reached base on the miscue, later scored along with Knowles on a single to left field by Luke Brankley.

Ferrum Takes Momentum From No.7-ranked Mary Washington, 4-0
May 19, 2005

Salisbury, MD - Ferrum College sophomore hurler Ryan Cooper tossed a six-hit shutout in the opening game of the 2005 NCAA Division III Salisbury Regional Baseball Tournament and his effort was good enough to send the No.20-ranked Panthers into the winners’ bracket with a 4-0 upset victory over No.7-ranked University of Mary Washington at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Thursday.

The second-seeded Panthers (22-12-1) will advance to meet No.4-seed Hampden-Sydney (25-13), which upset top-seed Salisbury, 4-0, in the second game of the first round. The second-round contest will start at 11 a.m. Friday. No.2-seed Mary Washington (26-9) will face top-seeded Salisbury, which fell to the Tigers in the second game of the day. The Mary Washington-Salisbury contest will begin at 3 p.m., with the loser being eliminated from the post-season tournament. UMW has defeated Salisbury four times already this season.

Everything seemed to fall into place for the Panthers on Thursday. Although second baseman Donnie Sprouse went down with an injury when hit a single in the opening frame and turned his ankle while crossing first base, the x-rays came back negative and senior Tim Clay came in played errorless in Sprouse’s absence.

"It was one of those days when everything just fell into place and went our way," Ferrum head coach Abe Naff. "Donnie’s injury wasn’t as bad as we first thought and (Clay) came in and played great defensively. And I can’t say enough about the effort of Cooper on the mound."

Cooper, only a sophomore, went the distance on the hill, raising his season record to 6-1. He had his sidearm curveball clipping the corners of the plate and struck out six and walked just one in the complete-game victory.

Kevin Foeman (10-3) took the setback for the Eagles. He went the distance, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out 11 and walking six.

Ferrum won the contest despite stranding 14 baserunners. Panther first baseman Kasey Harmon had a perfect day at the plate, finishing 3-for-3, with a triple and a pair of RBI. Designated hitter Jesse Bowles went 1-for-4, picking up a double, center fielder Brent Sowers was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Sprouse was a perfect 1-for-1.

Second baseman Tom McDermott paced the Eagles, finishing 2-for-4. Riley Gorman tagged his second double of the season when he came off the bench as a pinch hitter. Center fielder Eric Fitzgerald, first baseman Brandon Cole and right fielder Mike Murphy also picked up hits for Mary Washington, which lost for the fourth time in five games.
