Sea Gulls and
Osprey force OT but end in 1-1 tie
Pomona, N.J. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team battled
Richard Stockton College to a 1-1 overtime tie, in a night game on the road. The
Sea Gulls (1-0-1) were led by senior goalie Samantha Phipps who made nine
saves on 10 shots faced.
The first
half was dominated by the Osprey (1-1-1) who outshot the Sea Gulls, 5-1, as both
teams went into halftime knotted at zero.
It didn't
take long for the Sea Gull attack to get on the board in the second frame, as
junior Kate Weaver scored her third goal of the season off an assist by
senior Meghan Mabey in the 46th minute. However, the Osprey would tie the
game in the 67th minute on an unassisted goal by Lindsay Roake.
Richard
Stockton had two scoring chances in the overtime periods, but Phipps stood
strong, making saves on both of the Osprey attempts. Salisbury was held without
a shot in overtime, despite having a corner kick in the first overtime.
RSC
goalie Alex Rogers finished the game with four saves.
The Sea
Gulls will next play host to top-ranked and defending NCAA Division III national
champions Messiah College on Saturday, September 9 at 2 p.m. at the SU Soccer
Complex.
