CNU
scores four straight to drop SU
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The
Salisbury University women's soccer team closed out its regular-season schedule
with a thud as the Gulls lost 4-1 to Christopher Newport University on Wednesday
afternoon at Captains Field. The loss snaps the Sea Gull's four-game winning
streak as they head into this weekend’s Capital Athletic Conference tournament.
Salisbury
(7-6-1) came close to scoring first, as Dana Passucci's shot in the 20th
minute hit the crossbar and the rebound attempt by Sara Schmidt was saved
by CNU goalie Erin Wojtkun (two saves). CNU got on the board, seven minutes
later, as Amanda Peters fired home a shot past SU goalie Samantha Phipps (one
save). The Captains led 1-0 at the half.
Christopher Newport (10-6-1) would score the first three goals of the second
half to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Marcia Betoney scored in the 54th minute,
Peters recorded her second goal of the game in the 68th minute off a feed from
Hillary Carney and Jenn Campbell scored in the 75th minute off an assist from
Ashley Glover.
SU
finally scored in the 82nd minute as Erin Casey netted her sixth goal of
the season off a feed from Sam Asch.
CNU
outshot Salisbury 15-9, as the Gulls could only muster four shots on goal.
Sophomore goalie Kristin Greene (three saves) relieved Phipps in the
second half and allowed the final two CNU goals.
The Sea
Gulls will now await the official announcement of the 2006 CAC tournament
bracket, which should be released on Thursday, to see who they will play.
