Salisbury
opens indoor season with 14th place showing
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. –
The Salisbury University indoor track and field team opened up its season
Saturday at the Frank Colden Invitational at Ursinus College where the Sea Gulls
competed against Division I and III teams. The SU finished 14th out of 20 teams
in both the men's and women's competitions even though the Sea Gulls only
traveled a quarter of their roster.
On the
men's side the 4x400 meter relay team of Colton Vander Vliet, Josh
Michael, Marcus Tines and Samuel Singleton finished third
(3:33.89) behind the University of Delaware and Temple University. Michael
earned five points for the Sea Gulls in the 1,000 meter run where he placed
fourth (2:36.91). Tines was tied for fifth in the 200 meter dash (23.66) and
Singleton grabbed a point for SU with his eighth place finish in the 400 meter
dash (52.58).
In the
field events, sophomore Rachel Knapstein tied her own indoor record in
the women's pole vault with a height of nine feet. She was tied with two other
competitors for sixth place. Fellow sophomores Jenn Bulger and Jessica
Carey both tied for fourth place in the women's high jump as they cleared
four feet and 10 inches. Freshman Brandon Fugett was eighth in the men's
shot put with a distance of 13.36 meters.
The SU men's team (17.5
points) edged out Capital Athletic Conference rival University of Mary
Washington (17th place – six points) while the Eagles finished ninth (21 points)
in the women's standings where SU tallied 11 points.
The Sea
Gulls will next compete at the Thomson Invitational next Saturday, February 10,
at the University of Delaware in Newark, Del. The competition begins at 9 a.m.
