SU finishes two-day meet with third and fourth place showing
KUTZTOWN, Pa. -
The 2006 Golden Bear Swimming Invitational ended on Saturday evening at Kutztown University and the final standings showed Salisbury University ranked right in the middle. The SU women's team finished fourth out of eight teams with 282 points and the men's team was third out of five with 408 points. The host school won both the men's and women's meets which consisted of 36 events that spanned two days.

The SU men's team did great in the freestyle events as seniors Cole Mangum (22.57) and Mike Fowler (23.09) finished second and third in the 50 yard free. Mike Fowler also finished third in the 100 free (51.00) as he just missed the first place time of 49.74. Freshman Sean Snee went the distance in the 1650 yard free with a time of 19:08.03 good enough for fifth place. In the 200 yard IM the Sea Gulls went fourth, fifth and sixth as Jaime Overholt (2:16.85), Ryan Forbes (2:18.11) and Ian Branigan (2:20.36) all improved on their preliminary times. Junior Matt Anderson finished fourth in the 200 yard backstroke (2:15.10) and fifth in the 100 yard backstroke (1:03.04). Freshman Mike Ferrari was fifth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:06.06) and sixth in the 100 yard backstroke (1:03.81).

The Salisbury women's team best finish in the individual events was turned in by junior Erin Smith in the 100 yard butterfly when she got second place with a time of 1:05.51. Smith also finished sixth in the 200 yard IM (2:26.03). Freshman Lindsay Southworth finished sixth in two events; 200 yard breaststroke (2:25.94) and the 100 yard backstroke (1:08.16). Sea Gull freshman Maureen Gillespie finished fifth in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:40.23); sophomore Raienne South was sixth in the 200 yard butterfly (2:32.03); and senior Laura Allen was sixth in the 400 yard IM (5:04.99).

The Sea Gulls did well in the team relay events as the women's team had two fourth place finishes in the 200 yard freestyle (1:48.02) and the 200 yard medley (2:02.74). SU also finished fifth in the 800 yard free (8:41.28); two sixth place finishes in the 400 yard medley (4:29.91), 400 yard free (4:00.65). The SU men's team was a second behind first place Montclair State in the 200 yard freestyle (1:31.35). The Gulls got two third place finishes in the 800 yard free (8:00.48), 400 yard free (3:25.92); a fourth place finish in the 200 yard medley (1:49.77); two fifth place finishes in the 400 yard medley (4:04.62), 200 yard free (1:36.93 - B team); and three sixth place finishes in the 800 yard free (8:32.08 - B team), 400 yard medley (4:06.99 - B team), 200 yard medley (1:51.89).

Salisbury closes out the 2006 calendar year with a home meet with conference rival York College at 1 p.m., Saturday, December 2.
