SU goes yard in sweep of VWC
SALISBURY, Md.- The
Salisbury University softball team unloaded its bats as it took two from
Virginia Wesleyan College on a breezy Tuesday afternoon at Sea Gull Field by a
combined score of 44-5 where they belted 12 home runs and 41 hits.
Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Week Kelly Waskewicz continued
her hot streak as she was a perfect 7-for-7 at the plate in both games with
three home runs, three doubles, seven runs and eight RBIs. On the season, the
freshman is hitting .453 with 48 hits, 11 doubles, 14 HRs, 41 RBIs and 105 total
bases in 106 at-bats.
Salisbury (25-7) wasted no time as they exploded for nine runs in each of the
first two innings en route to a 25-2 victory. Six different Gulls hit home runs
in the game led by freshman Ali Ritter (3-for-3, three runs, three RBIs)
who hit her fifth round tripper and junior Stacey Malarkey (2-for-3, two
runs, three RBIs) who upped her total to nine.
SU hurler Stacy Davis (10-2) earned the victory in the circle as she
allowed two runs on four hits. Davis also helped her cause out at the dish as
she went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and her first home run of the season.
The Sea Gull bench also chipped in five hits in 15 at-bats with six RBIs.
Game two was no different for the Sea Gulls as they blasted five home runs and
11 extra base hits to go on to a 19-3 win. Junior Kurisha Hoffman and
freshman Jen Cahall led the way for SU as they combined to go 6-for-7
with six runs, six RBIs and two home runs. Senior Nichole Fuqua added
three RBIs with her fifth home run of the season.
Junior Kirsten Wells went the distance for Salisbury as she improved her
record to 12-5. Wells went 2-for-3 at the plate with a game-high four RBIs and
one home run.
Virginia Wesleyan (11-24) was led by center fielder Allison Cockrell who was a
perfect 3-for-3.
Salisbury will await the winner of the Mary Washington and Gallaudet play-in
game as they will host this weekend’s CAC tournament at Sea Gull Field beginning
on Saturday, April 21, at 10 am.
