Home runs power Salisbury past Allegheny
SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University softball team swept Allegheny College in a Sunday afternoon doubleheader at Sea Gull Field 2-0 and 7-1.

Salisbury (8-4) was powered by its bats as it hit three home runs en route to a 7-1 victory over Allegheny in the second game. Freshman shortstop Kelly Waskewicz (3-for-4, three runs, three RBI) cranked two homers in the game. Waskewicz is hitting .487 with 12 RBI, 15 runs scored and a team-high five through 12 games. Fellow freshman Jen Cahall added a scorcher off the fence which she stretched into a two run inside the park homer as the Sea Gulls exploded for four runs in the fifth to send the game out of reach. Designated hitter Meaghan Murphy also added two hits and one RBI for the Gulls.

Junior ace Kirsten Wells (4-2) went the distance for SU. Wells gave up one run on 10 hits with two walks and three strikeouts to earn her fourth win. Wells went 1-for-3 at the dish as well.

Allegheny (1-5) scored its lone run off back-to-back doubles in the top of the fourth with the RBI credited to Maggie Bodenlos.

The Sea Gulls shutout the Gators in the first game, 2-0 behind sophomore pitcher Stacy Davis (3-2) as she recorded the complete game shutout. Davis and gave up only four hits, one walk and struck out seven.

Senior catcher Tee Dronenburg got the Gulls on the board when she singled in junior Ashley Stern in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Nichole Fuqua continued to swing a hot bat as she hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to tack on an insurance run for SU. Fuqua has hit a homerun in three of her last six games and extended her hitting streak to 11 games.

Shortstop Rachel Ryan added two hits for Allegheny. The Gators wrap up the weekend 1-5 after going 1-3 in the Sea Gull Invitational where they beat York (Pa.), 3-1.


Salisbury
will hit the road to take on Christopher Newport University on Tuesday, March 13, at 2 p.m. CNU participated in the Sea Gull Invitational over the weekend where they went 3-1. The Captains defeated the Sea Gulls 6-3 on Saturday afternoon.
