Salisbury wins Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament to open the season
CRESSON, Pa. - The Salisbury University men’s basketball team started the season off on the right foot as they won the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament at Mt. Aloysius College this weekend. The Sea Gulls finished 2-0 as they took down Mt. Aloysius and Waynesburg College.

Coaches vs. Cancer logoSalisbury beat Mt. Aloysius in the title game on Saturday afternoon, 97-76. Senior Ray Williams hit his first two three-point shots, in the game’s first 23 seconds, to put the Gulls up 6-0 as they never trailed. SU went on 19-0 run at one point in the first half and went into intermission with a 53-27 lead. Williams led the way for the Sea Gulls with 25 points.

Sophomore forward Ozi Menakaya had a huge day for SU as he contributed his second double-double in as many games. Menakaya had 18 points to go along with 13 rebounds and three blocks.

Gary Ward was the third Sea Gull in double figures with 19 points as the junior led SU in points and minutes (26) off the bench.

Mt. Aloysius was led by Roman Mims who led all scorers with 28 points in the loss.

Salisbury advanced to the championship game after it beat Waynesburg 95-18 on Friday night. SU was led by its backcourt duo of Segun Odumeru and Williams. Senior guard Odumeru poured in 27 points in only 21 minutes as he shot 12-of-17 from the field. Williams added 22 points and was 3-of-5 from three-point range.

Salisbury also got big contributions from starters Menakaya (17 points, 13 rebounds) and Devin Jones (11 points, four assists). Ward once again led all Sea Gull bench scorers with nine points.

Waynesburg’s Jeff Nero led all scorers with 32 points with five three-pointers in the losing effort.

Salisbury will return to action Tuesday, November 21 in its home opener against Villa Julie in the Provident Bank Pride of Maryland Tournament at 7:30 p.m.
