Catholic Survives Late Salisbury Rally
WASHINGTON, D.C.-
Salisbury University, down 11 with 1:43 remaining, mounted a furious comeback
that fell just short against Capital Athletic Conference foe Catholic University
on Saturday. CUA held on for the 74-72 victory and handed SU its ninth loss away
from Salisbury this season. With the loss, the Sea Gulls drop to 12-11 overall
(7-7 CAC), and the Cardinals climb to 17-5 (9-5 CAC).
Segun Odumeru
led the Sea Gulls with 17 points, and Ray Williams added 16 with 14 of
those coming in the second half. Frank Gerald finished with ten points
and nine rebounds to pace Salisbury on the glass.
For the game, the Gulls shot only 35.7 percent, but Salisbury limited turnovers
and converted at the foul line to hang close. The Cardinals struggled at the
charity stripe as they shot a chilly 18-35 (51.4 percent).
Catholic had two players with double-doubles as Patrick Dwyer and Stephen
Wheeler poured in 25 and 20 points, respectively. Dwyer grabbed 12 boards and
Wheeler finished with 11 rebounds to provide the Cardinals with a slight
rebounding edge.
Salisbury returns to action at home on Valentine’s Day against Marymount. The
Sea Gulls are looking to gain some momentum as they head toward the postseason.
