CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Salisbury University men's tennis team went 1-2
on its spring break trip to the state of California. SU (6-2) dropped its first
two matches of the week by identical 6-3 margins to Pomona-Pitzer and the
University of the South. The losses snapped the Sea Gulls' five-game win streak.
The Sea Gulls rebounded with a 9-0 shutout of the University of La Verne on
March 21.
The Sea
Gulls had a tough task going up against No. 22 Pomona-Pitzer but SU was able to
snag three victories against the Sagehens. Sophomore Matt Nicholson
defeated Pomona-Pitzer's No. 1 singles Jeff Jablonski in three sets, 5-7, 6-3,
6-2. Both student-athletes are ranked No. 14 in their respective regions.
Freshmen Scott Burtzlaff and Evan Thomas came away with wins in
the No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches, respectively.
Salisbury
No. 1 doubles team of Nicholson and junior Brendan Kincaid defeated
Charlie Boyd and David Pointer from the University of the South, 8-4. The other
two Sea Gull points were delivered by Burtzlaff and Thomas in the in-region
loss. The University of the South is ranked No. 10 in the Atlantic South region,
two spots below Salisbury.
The Sea
Gulls ended the trip on a high note with a 9-0 victory against La Verne (1-10).
