Salisbury scores
late to beat No. 24 Rochester
SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's soccer team
shut out the 24th ranked University of Rochester, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at SU
Soccer Complex as the Gulls netted the game-winner late in the match.
The Sea
Gulls (5-1-1) played tough all game before they broke the scoreless tie in the
84th minute. Freshman Kyle Sterling set up a streaking Wijy Jones,
who beat Rochester goalie Paco Corbalan (three saves), for his second goal of
the year.
The Gulls
stepped up and outshot the Yellowjackets (4-2-1) in the second half, 9-3.
SU got
another great game in goal from junior Matt Blue (three saves) as he
earned his second win in as many starts. Seniors Scott Forney and T.J.
Nairn led the Sea Gull defense, as they held Rochester’s two top goal
scorers to only two shots (one on goal). Salisbury's defense has not given up a
goal in 180 minutes since the overtime loss to York College a week ago.
Salisbury is midway through its five-game home stand (SU is 2-1
during the home stand) as the Gulls will toe it up again 4 p.m., Wednesday,
September 27, against Capital Athletic Conference foe St. Mary's College (Md.).
