Second half penalty kicks the difference against rival UMW
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -
The Salisbury University men's soccer team surrendered two second half penalty kicks to conference rival University of Mary Washington to squander a 2-1 lead and loss 3-2 on a rainy and cold Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 700 on the road.

The Eagles (9-2, 4-0 CAC) snap a six-game winless streak to the Sea Gulls (7-3-1, 3-3 CAC), who lose their third Capital Athletic Conference game this season.

In a game that is always emotional for both teams the squads combined for 35 fouls (SU-17, UMW-18), six yellow cards (SU-2, UMW-4) and the final three goals were scored off penalty kicks.

Mary Washington's Tommy Park tied the game at two apiece at  the 47th minute off a penalty kick followed by Vincent Kooijman's mark when he booted home another penalty kick at the 59th minute past Salisbury goalie Scott McGuire (one save) for the eventual game-winner.

UMW outshot SU, 8-7, and took three more corners then the Sea Gulls, 6-3.

Salisbury jumped out to a quick start as senior Wijy Jones scored in the third minute of the game, off an assist from sophomore forward Nick Malone. The Eagles knotted the game at one apiece in the 21st minute as Tommy DiNuzzo scored the unassisted goal against the Sea Gulls.

SU back T.J. Nairn scored a penalty kick goal in the 35th minute past UMW goalie Elliott Jones (four saves) to send the Sea Gulls into halftime up 2-1.

The Gulls will be back in action at the SU Soccer Complex against the Mustangs of Villa Julie College at 4 p.m., Wednesday, October 11.
