Salisbury
bounced from CAC Tournament by York
YORK, PA. – For the
second year in a row the Salisbury University men's soccer team saw its Capital
Athletic Conference championship aspirations dashed by York College (Pa.). This
time around the defending CAC champions knocked off the Sea Gulls a round
earlier, in the semifinals, with two second half goals to win 2-0 on Wednesday
afternoon before 450 fans.
Salisbury (11-5-1), the fourth-seed, came out of a scoreless halftime
poised to place pressure on the York defense. The Sea Gulls had five scoring
chances during the first nine minutes of the second half. In addition to those
five chances, SU senior Wijy Jones had a goal called off due to an
offsides penalty. That call ruined the opportunity for SU to score first and
would later end Jones' streak of consecutive games with a goal at six.
Top-seeded York (18-0-2), also ranked third in the nation, then responded with
its first goal of the game off the foot of forward Mike Baker at the 56th
minute. Baker's fifth goal of the year would be the eventual game-winner.
The
Spartans would add an unassisted Kurt Lane goal during the closing minutes to
seal the game. York extends its unbeaten streak to 36 games and will host
second-seeded Mary Washington at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, November 4. Mary
Washington knocked off St. Mary's College 2-1 in the other semifinal game.
Sea Gull
goalie Matt Blue made eight saves in the loss while Kyle Marks (eight
saves) earned his sixth shutout of the season.
York now has a three-game winning streak against Salisbury. The
Spartans defeated the Sea Gulls 1-0 in last year's CAC title game and followed
that up with a 2-1 overtime victory in Salisbury, earlier this season.
