Record Setting Day for SU in Sea Gull Opener "It was truly an outstanding day for us," said Salisbury coach Jim Jones. "This was a tremendous win for our women's team. We have never won this meet before." Sophomore Kelly Sullivan found another gear during the last 800 meters of the 6,000-meter race to win the first race of the season with a time of 22:10. The Sea Gulls had three runners finish in the top-5 as the team tallied 47 points. Sophomores Glenna Sullivan (22:57) and Amanda Hill (23:03) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, for the Sea Gulls. Freshman Emily Hammonds had a strong showing in her debut for SU with a 16th place finish (24:11) and sophomore Briana Woodslawsky (24:31) just missed a top-20 finish by one spot. "It was a lot of fun today," said Kelly Sullivan. "We just need to keep working hard and improving everyday." University of Mary Washington came in second with 62 points followed by Franklin & Marshall College with 77 points. F&M runner Karen Ziga was 22 seconds off the pace of Kelly Sullivan and finished second. Millersville University’s Priscilla Jennings edged out Glenna Sullivan for third place with a time of 22:44. On the men's side the United States Naval Academy recorded a perfect score (15 points) to win the men's 8,000-meter competition. The Midshipmen swept the first five places as seven runners finished in the top-10. In the past seven Sea Gull Opener appearances for Navy the Midshipmen have won the event five times. Navy junior Benjamin Kozy took home first place as his teammate Christopher Horel finished second, as the two runners recorded the same time of 25:43. Freshman Matlack Gillin was five seconds off the winning pace as he took third. Salisbury senior Will Murdoch shaved 30 seconds off his time from a year ago to finish sixth with a time of 26:04. Sea Gull junior Eric Graves finished ninth with a time of 26:26 while fellow junior Buck Stokes (26:41) crossed the line two spot behind Graves. SU finished the day with a team score of 56 points to earn second place. Millersville University took home third place with 100 points. "It was a good day for us," said Murdoch. "Navy definitely brings it every year and dominates but for us to come in second shows the strength of our program." Salisbury will next race in the Towson University Invitational next Saturday at Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville, Md. | ||||||||||||||||
