Salisbury takes two from
Staten Island
SALISBURY,
Md.
- The No. 26 ranked Salisbury University baseball team swept a pair of games
from the College of Staten Island on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium,
16-0, 13-2. The Salisbury offense dominated as it piled up 22 hits and 29 runs
in the doubleheader.
The Sea Gull
offense wasted no time as they opened up the first inning of the first game with
11 runs. The first four Gulls to reach the plate all earned free passes.
Freshman Mike Celenza cashed in on the base loaded opportunity as
he laced a single that drove in two to start the onslaught. Celenza finished the
first game going 4-for-4 with a game-high four RBI and two runs scored. Senior
Brain Theilbault and junior Mark Bostwick each recoded two
hits and two RBI to power the Salisbury bats. Salisbury (7-1) saw 15 batters
come to the plate in the first inning.
The lead was more than enough support for lefty starter Dan Oleynik (2-0)
to earn the victory. Oleynik threw five innings, four and two-thirds of which
was a perfect game, and struck out two. Freshmen hurlers
David Eissner and
J.D. Polcari finished the game in relief as they combined to strike out
the final six batters.
The
second game was no different as the Sea Gull bats and pitching clicked on all
cylinders. Senior Andrew Jenson led Salisbury offensively with two hits,
three RBI, three runs scored and one stolen base in the second contest. Senior
third baseman Alex Vitale and Bostwick (two stolen bases) both added a
pair of hits.
Junior Ryan Bennick picked up his second victory of the season as he went
five innings, struck out six batters and surrendered two hits.
Staten Island
got hits from Thomas DeWaters, Ray Valerio and Devon DiCasolio in the final
game.
Salisbury
will take the field again Thursday, March 1, as they travel to Washington
College for a 2 p.m. start.
