Fall 2001 Syllabus
Class Objectives
This course is designed to introduce you to web page design without an extensive knowledge of Hyper Text Markup Language HTML. This course will be taught with the visual hands on approach. By the completion of this course, you will have several published web documents. You will also have the opportunity to update a working sight, the Art Department 3-d sight.
Course Requirements
You must have a valid student computer account for this course. You will be expected to do a minimum of 8 hours per week outside of class. This will include assignments, reading, research, meetings, and general preparation for class presentations. Presentations are expected to be through both hard copy digital real time examples. In addition, there will be two group critiques of your midterm and final web sights. They count for the mid-term and final exam grades. Failure to participate in critiques will result in automatic failure of this course. You are required to hand in quality presentations of your work and a disk of all of the work you wish to be considered for grading by the required deadlines, at the mid term and final, in order to receive credit for this course. You will be required to make a rerecord of your work, through a sketchbook throughout the semester 1 page per day of research, writing, pictures or drawings. Code of conduct
3 unexcused absences will result in an automatic failure of this course. Familiarize your self with the Salisbury University computer lab regulations. You are responsible for any materials contained within your web sight. If your conduct using the SU computer lab or materials contained within your web sight is considered illegal, unsuitable or offensive as outlined within the SU code of conduct, State or Federal laws, you may be subject to censure, suspension of computer lab privileges, dismissal from school, fines or jail time.

Presentation Media binder, media sleeves folders etc.


Week 1 Sept 5th Class Orientation Student accounts
Reading Assignment: Chapters 1-5 FrontPage visually(Maran)
Research: Find 3 exceptional Web sights on the World Wide Web for.
Assignment: Using the information found on the SU web sight, http://helpdesk.salisbury.edu/support/webpages.htm
and the text book make a student web page, using MS frontpage2000
Your web presentation should include an indexed hard copy, which includes:
Any extra credit you wish to have considered for your grade. This should be a Full page-by-page navigational lay out. Directory tree Backup copies of your work on disk.

Text an E-mail link *(an alternative e-mail address may be required).

3 links shareware attribute i.e. Java Script or other shareware.
a table digital scrapbook
(If you don't have a digital picture of your self, bring a 3.5 floppy to class on Monday We will shoot your pictures in class
This will be your temporary SU student web page. Be prepared to show your work in class in 4 weeks so be as creative as possible! This sight will be added to and referred to throughout the course make backups of all of your files your grade depends on it!

Week 2 Sept 10th & 12th
Look at your exceptional sights
Reading Assignment: Chapters 6-10 Maran
Research: Draw a tree for your Web page using a storyboard format and describe its function. Using written words under the illustrations.
Assignment: Continue working on your web page using your student account. Try to make it as complex as possible import GIFs JPEGs and animations.
*Keep in mind most images are copy written and you may need permission, or pay a fee to legally use them, (Unless you significantly alter them).
REMINDER: write down your user IDs and Passwords in a safe place like your sketchbook. Also, back up all of your work! Keep multiple copies of important information on your P:\ Drive incase of computer network failure! No data no grade!

Week 3 Sept 17th & 19th (Sep14th -19th Rosh Hashanah Danny out of town)
MS Front Page 2000 Introduction.
Reading: Chapters 11-15 (Marin)
Assignment: Create an electronic scrapbook of 100 images or more. Collect GIFs, animations and JPEGs from life and the www. to be used on your web sight. Keep your scrapbook organized! Use a program like MS Word to sequence everything and catalogued in annotated bibliography form on paper as follows: #, The Image, the date, a brief description, and where it came from.
Your p:/ drive will not hold all of your information for this assignment keep them on detailed labeled (IBM) 3.5" floppy disks, zip 100, or CD Rom. The disk(s)and bibliographical key must be in a binder with the proper media storage to receive credit when turned in. (due next week)

MIDTERM ASSIGNMENT: Due Oct 22-
Select a section from the SU 3-D web site to work in. You will be responsible for updating and creating up to 5 pages (slide galleries can count as more)
Responsibilities include:
updating links, graphics, libraries, calendars
adding new photos and text
new page design
new navigation
cataloging, image libraries

Week 5 Oct 3rd & 5th
Java Scripts
Assignment: Using the www research a shareware element you can add to your web page. Java scripts (like mouse-overs) and games can be an easy way to add a unique element to your sight.
Due in two weeks

Week 6 Oct 10th & 12th
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) rollovers, no repeat background.
Assignment: Using Style sheets create the following effects:
A text related effect, background effect, graphic effect, an animation effect.
Points: assignment 50
Reading: (Style sheet help) Chapter 6 & 12 (Bible)

Week 7 Oct 15th & 17th
Pre mid-term presentations
Show Java Script and Style Sheet examples to the class

Show your progress on SU 3-D web Pages
Presentation and hard copy due all media must be bound.
Don't forget documentation of your projects to the mid-term
Your work will be critiqued, New research should be added to your pages and changes should be made based on critique before publishing.
