Class Objectives
So you want to blow glass? This course builds on basic glassblowing skills with practical demonstrations that introduce alternative methods in glass working. Colour techniques, combined hot processes cold work and refining of technical skills, theory of glass studio construction, and maintenance are also explored In other words…help you develop sculptural technique. Glass working is fun, but what can you do with it? During this course we will be working with colour and intermediate to advanced techniques to make art using blown glass. Concept will be emphasized more so than in your previous intro class. Advanced students are expected to understand the basic 6 forms of glass working. You are also expected to help beginning students' work safely in the studio by offering a positive role model and helpful advice.
Teamwork is necessary for all work in this medium therefore; our intent is to allow students to experience a multitude of approaches, processes and techniques for the implementation of ideas and forms in glass. Working through weekly assignments, visiting artists, Techs, and your instructor will allow you to accomplish this goal.
Health & Safety and Studio operations will be emphasized through practical demonstrations, videos, the text and lectures. The management of a safe working environment is essential to your continued healthy development as glass artists. Each student will be encouraged to investigate glass, and it's various forming process. Personal artistic goals will propose and meet while developing technique.
We will have class reviews every week as well as formal critiques for the mid term and final to aid in your growth and development. In addition you will be required to make a record of your work, through a sketchbook and slides of finished work at the mid term and final
You are responsible for all class material. In the unlikely event that you should miss a class you should make sure that you are aware of the material you have missed. Periodic quizzes, worth a percentage of your grade, are given on course lecture, assigned readings and research. Please obtain the phone numbers of 2 or 3 of your classmates in case of emergencies.
The 3-D glass studio is a challenging environment that works because a collective of responsible students and faculty, which form a close-knit community, runs it. You will be required to follow all Health & safety procedures and act responsibly with regards to others and equipment. Failure to do so will result in your dismissal from this class! Misuse of equipment and tools may result in injury to you as well as damage to the facility. If you are unsure of proper procedure please seek assistance from a more knowledgeable person (the Techs and advanced students will be willing to assist you) Even though the glass area requires a great deal of commitment and responsibility, it is an exciting and rewarding place to be and work. Welcome back.
