Fall 2001 Syllabus

Class Objectives
This course is designed to introduce you to the exciting 3-dimensional medium of Hot Glass. Students will experience a multitude of approaches, processes and techniques for the implementation of ideas and forms in glass. This is best accomplished by understanding the 7 basic blown glass forms. All blown glass sculpture and functional objects are based on these forms.

The management of a safe working environment is essential to your continued healthy development as glass artists. Glass working, Health and Safety & Studio operations are emphasized through practical demonstrations, text and lectures. Each student will be encouraged to investigate the material, the forming process and personal artistic goals, while developing technique. We will have class reviews every week as well as formal critiques for the mid term and final to aid in your growth and development as artists. In addition, you will be required to make a record of your work, through a sketchbook and slides of finished work at the mid term and final.

You are required to participate in at least two blow slots per week. If you miss a blow slot you must find a suitable replacement for your partner on that day. A missed blow slot constitutes an absence. Three or more unexcused absences during the semester will result in your automatic failure of this course. All students will be assigned batching duties and are required to participate in weekly shop cleanup. Failure to comply will affect your grade negatively and can result in a loss of blowing privileges. If you are unable to participate in scheduled shop cleanup you will be assigned a shop job as makeup.

You will find the 3-D glass studio a new and challenging environment. The only way this environment can function is because a close nit community of responsible students and faculty runs it. You will be required to follow all Health & safety procedures and act responsibly with regards to others and equipment. Failure to do so will result in your dismissal from this class. Misuse of equipment and tools may result in injury to you, as well as damage to the facility. If you are unsure of proper procedure please seek assistance from a more knowledgeable person (The senior students and area Techs will be willing to assist you) Even though the glass area requires a great deal of commitment and responsibility, it is an exciting and rewarding place to be and work. Welcome.
