Mandie Gittelman

BA - graphic design

My goal as a designer is to show how important influences truly are in art. The main influences on my work derive from my love of the outdoors and music. As a designer, my creations are far from clean-cut. I incorporate the organic free flowing shapes that I feel through the fluidity of the music I listen to and the color tones from nature, into my designs. When designing I draw most of my color schemes from the earth tones around me but just as nothing in the outdoors is strictly one color, I encompass that color theory into my work as well. Although I start out with the simple earth tones, I then accentuate everything with color because that is a fundamental aspect in nature. There are millions of colors everywhere if you just look close enough, no grass is just green and no sky is just blue. My shapes and free forms not only come from the fluidity of music but they come from the organic shapes found in nature as well. I often incorporate organic elements, such as the sky, leaves, or even trees, into my work, or an abstract mock up of these shapes. The typefaces I lean towards in designing are those that are free flowing and allow the viewer to allude to shapes and aspects of nature when reading them. One look at my work and there is an instant sensation of wanting to be outside discovering the world.
