MAJOR FIELD OF STUDY: Spanish/Communication Arts
CURRENT EMPLOYER: HardMoneyBankers.com and REI360.net
CURRENT OCCUPATION: Business Owner - Real Estate and Internet Industries
DESCRIBE YOUR CAREER PATH:
I'm a Bethesda, MD-based entrepreneur operating both offline and online businesses. Hardmoneybankers.com is a commercial lending company we founded in 2007 and quickly grew to 25mm in loan volume and 7 figure revenues. This required us to 1) raise 25mm in investor capital when we were in our 20s (yikes!) AND become experts in web marketing to quickly disrupt a market previously dominated by old school "mom and pop" operations. Our passion for internet marketing (PPC, SEO, social, email sequencing, etc) led us to build and launch our web startup, REI360.net, a software and training membership site for real estate investors. These stories and the many things we learned along the way will be covered in our book "The Whiteboard: Go From Blank Canvas to a Productive, Leveraged & Highly Profitable Business" due out Fall 2015.
MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU LEARNED WHILE ATTENDING SALISBURY UNIVERSITY:
The most important thing I learned at Salisbury was how to think and act for myself. As a teenager prior to coming to SU, I didn't yet know what I was into but I could tell what I didn't like. Being on my own and away from home gave me the freedom and opportunity to figure out who I was as a student, a person, and, later on, a professional. This mindset of paving my own way is what led me to discover my passion for entrepreneurship.
WHAT CAMPUS ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS WERE YOU INVOLVED WITH?
Intramural sports, drama class, gym, Spanish honor society
BEST COLLEGE MEMORY:
I would have to say the lifelong friends that I made at SU and the great times we've had together, at school and since. As a matter of fact, 4 of us from freshman year dorm were recently in a friend's wedding in St. Mary's County, MD..
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SALISBURY UNIVERSITY?
I was at first attracted by the size of the school and its proximity to the beach. As time went on, and I matured as a person, I really began to enjoy studying and became close with a few professors in particular. And as it turns out, I was a pretty good student.
IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE SALISBURY UNIVERSITY IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE AND WHY?
Community: I remember feeling the camaraderie of really getting to know my professors and classmates and how that translated into top-notch academic performance. Initiative: At the time I was at SU and definitely since, they have always been building, developing and launching something new. In a time of incredible technological and human advancement, it's nice to see your alma mater doing its part to make the educational experience even better tomorrow than it was yesterday. Ok, those were pretty good. I'm going to stop at two words.
FAVORITE VACATION SPOT AND WHY?
San Diego, CA!! I lived there for a year after graduating SU in 2002 and still go back to visit friends. In fact, I was just there for Memorial Day weekend.
Having a son! After that, growing my businesses and being able to employ a staff of great people who are having fun, being productive and learning how to think the way my business partner and I do. Our company culture goes about like this: you can wear what you want, play the music you want and come and go as you please. There is just one caveat-- you have to be absolutely excellent at your job.
WHAT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU?
My son and his mother live in Colombia, South America (see Spanish major above). I'm there frequently to visit.
Gym, reading, travel.
