Homecoming 2016

The events for Homecoming 2016 began on Tuesday, September 27, with the Alumni Faculty and Staff Breakfast sponsored by the Alumni Association. This event was designed to thank the alumni who work at Salisbury University for their continued support of their Alma Mater. On Friday, the traditional Maroon & Gold Golf Tournament was scheduled but had to be canceled due to weather.  On Friday evening, Brittany Elliott '06 (Field Hockey), Greg Lemon '06 (Baseball), Sean White '06 (Men's Lacrosse) and Dr. Michael Vienna (Director of Athletics) were inducted into the SU Athletics Hall of Fame. On Saturday, the Sixth Annual Alumni Pre-Game Barbeque was held adjacent to Sea Gull Stadium, with food and beverages, live music, and various activities available for alumni and their families. Alumni from the classes of ’76, ‘81, ’86, ’91, ‘96, ’01, ’06 and ’11 all had a presence at the event. This has become the signature event for Homecoming Weekend and continues to draw the most traffic.

There were several successful reunions that took place over the course of the weekend. The Class of 1966 Reunion Luncheon celebrated the Class of 1966's 50th class anniversary. The Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative, Acadia Reunion and LAMBDA Society all had gatherings across campus.

Alumni Engagement

Our alumni engagement for this past fiscal year included events in California; Colorado; Illinois; Georgia; North Carolina; Maryland; Washington, D.C.; and New York, as well as electronic communication that have reached over 29,000 alumni.

Our alumni events include networking opportunities in various cities within seven states as well as the District of Columbia, a craft night, a brewery tour, reunions that occur during Homecoming Week, athletic-team-specific reunions and club-sport-specific reunions that occur throughout the year.

Our electronic communication continued to increase this past year with the use of SU’s online community, Facebook, Linked-In, Instagram and general emails with the purpose of keeping our alumni informed and engaged while providing easy access to supporting the University. The Alumni Office continues to send a monthly newsletter that provides valuable information to our alumni and highlights our high-achieving alumni.

Alumni Awards

The Salisbury University Alumni Board of Directors gave out five awards at the winter 2016 Commencement. On Saturday, December 17, Jennifer Truitt-Lewis ‘04 was awarded the Service to Society Award and four faculty awards were given. Dr. David Rieck from the Henson School, Dr. Chrys Egan from the Fulton School, Paula Morris from the Perdue School and Dr. Laurie Andes from Seidel School received a faculty award representing their school from nominations of former students.

Alumni Service to Society Award - 2016

Jennifer Truitt-Lewis ‘04
Jennifer is currently the Principal of Colonel Johnston Elementary School located at Fort Huachuca in Arizona and an adjunct faculty member at Northern New Mexico College. Jennifer was an Elementary Education major with a minor in Psychology at Salisbury University. As an undergraduate Jennifer was an outstanding student with self-imposed high academic standards, which led to her earning her undergraduate degree in three years. Her commitment to academic excellence was evident at her graduation when she was adorned with many cords representing the various academic clubs and national honor societies in which she was active, as well as one indicating she had earned the honor of Magna Cum Laude. After graduation, Jennifer started her teaching career in the Wicomico County School District. Since then, Jennifer has taken every opportunity to ensure that her goal to become a principal would eventually be realized. Jennifer went on to earn two master’s degrees in Education. The first master’s from Park University was in the discipline of Educational Law in 2008. She earned her second master’s, in Education Administration, from Arizona State University in 2014.

Alumni Scholarship
The recipient for the Alumni Scholarship beginning in the 2016-2017 academic year was Shannon Bull ’20 for the Alumni Scholarship and Anna Robertson ’20 for the Schultheis Memorial Scholarship.

ConGRADulations Celebration
The Class of 2017 was celebrated at our senior celebration event on May 16. Student Government Association President Julia Howell and Salisbury University President Dr. Janet Dudley-Eshbach spoke to a crowd of over 500 graduating seniors. The event is made possible by the Alumni Association’s partnership with GEICO Insurance who increased their presence this year with two representatives attending the event.

Publications that reached our alumni for the 2017 fiscal year were two SU Today Campus News mailings, two SU Today Athletics News mailings (both going to a small segment of alumni) and our annual SU Magazine. The SU Magazine celebrated the Guerrieri Academic Commons as well as other alumni stories. Distribution of the SU Magazine reaches close to 47,000.

This fiscal year, the Alumni Office has worked on the latest Alumni Directory with PCI. This publication gives our alumni an opportunity to obtain verified and approved contact information on their fellow alumni while giving the alumni office their latest contact information.

 Affinity Partnerships

The SU Alumni Association has continued its relationship with GEICO. GEICO has been a tremendous partner with the SU Alumni Association, offering various insurance packages to SU alumni as well as financial support for alumni programming. They have been the title sponsor of the Senior Celebration ConGRADulations event the past few years.

College Insurance Resources provides healthcare and other programs so that we may offer our alumni the ability to purchase discounted insurance.

Alumni House & Garden

The Alumni House and Miller Garden continued to be a focal point for both on-campus groups and alumni hosting receptions, weddings and photo shoots. The local high schools continue to request the location for prom photos. The sale of garden bricks to parents of SU graduates in May and December have assisted in generating more revenue for upkeep and changes in the garden’s appearance.

Annual Giving

This year annual giving was up slightly from last year for number of donors. This in-part may be from SU’s inaugural giving day that created a level of excitement about philanthropy that has not been seen on the campus in a very long time.  Fueled by a matching gift from alumni Wayne and Melissa Jenkins, the Gulls Give 24 giving day was a tremendous success with 487 donors with over $80,000 of gifts and commitments.  For fiscal year 2017, Salisbury University had 2,969 Alumni donors who gave $475,979 in cash donations that lead to a 9.68% for alumni giving when using the solicitable base of 30,677. With a new phonathon software system that will be install in fall of 2017, we are hoping to continue this upward trend.

 Maroon & Gold Club

The Maroon & Gold Club had another tremendous year with the addition of 1,529 donors. The Maroon & Gold Club has brought in $ 328,550.31 in total dollars given, with the gifts supporting the 21 varsity sports that Salisbury University sponsors. The Sea Gull Stadium renovation project has raised $65,668.09 from 129 donors. All 129 of the Stadium Donors were also Maroon & Gold Club donors.

Total dollars (All funds recognized with M&GC benefits): $394,218.40
