Homecoming 2015

The events for Homecoming 2015 began on Tuesday, October 13, with the Alumni Faculty and Staff Breakfast sponsored by the Alumni Association. This event was designed to thank the alumni who work at Salisbury University for their continued support of their Alma Mater. On Friday, the traditional Maroon & Gold Golf Tournament raised substantial funds for the Maroon & Gold Club’s general fund, and in the evening, Jeff Bigas '05 (Men's Lacrosse), Lindsey Elliott '04 (Field Hockey), Stacie Gado '97 (Field Hockey, Track & Field), Dan Meehan '03 (Men’s Soccer) and Melissa Webster '04 (Field Hockey) were inducted into the SU Athletics Hall of Fame. On Saturday, the Fifth Annual Alumni Pre-Game Barbeque was held adjacent to Sea Gull Stadium, with food and beverages, live music, and various activities available for alumni and their families. Alumni from the classes of '75, '80, '85, '90, '95, '05 and '10 all had a presence at the event. This has become the signature event for Homecoming Weekend and continues to draw the most traffic.

There were several successful reunions that took place over the course of the weekend. The Class of 1965 Reunion Luncheon celebrated the Class of 1965's 50th class anniversary. The Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative, Acadia Reunion and LAMBDA Society all had gatherings across campus.

Alumni Engagement

Our alumni engagement for this past fiscal year included events in California; Colorado; Connecticut; Maryland; Washington, D.C.; and New York, as well as electronic communication that have reached over 29,000 alumni.

Our alumni events include networking opportunities in various cities within five states as well as the District of Columbia, a self-defense class, a paint night, reunions that occur during Homecoming Week, athletic-team-specific reunions and club-sport-specific reunions that occur throughout the year.

Our electronic communication continued to increase this past year with the use of SU’s online community, Facebook, Linked-In, Instagram and general emails with the purpose of keeping our alumni informed and engaged while providing easy access to supporting the University. The Alumni Office continues to send a monthly newsletter that provides valuable information to our alumni and highlights our high-achieving alumni.

Alumni Awards

The Salisbury University Alumni Board of Directors gave out five awards at the winter 2015 Commencement. On Saturday, December 19, Len Foxwell ’92 was awarded the Service to Society Award and four faculty awards were given. Drs. Stephen Gehnrich from the Henson School, Michael O'Loughlin from the Fulton School, Richard Hoffman from the Perdue School and Carol Wood from Seidel School received a faculty award representing their school from nominations of former students.

Alumni Service to Society Award - 2015

Len Foxwell ' 92

A 1992 graduate of SU, Len Foxwell currently serves as Chief of Staff for Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot. Prior to joining the Comptroller’s Office in 2007, Len served as Assistant to Salisbury University’s President for Government and Community Relations, and as Director of Government Relations for the Greater Washington Board of Trade. Len also served as Director of Washington-Area Transit Programs for the Maryland Department of Transportation from 1998-2002, and as Press Secretary for Governor Glendening’s successful 1998 re-election campaign. Len has been a tremendous advocate for Salisbury University in Annapolis on both sides of the party lines. He spends a great deal of time on the Eastern Shore helping in the community, whether it is teaching Character Counts at Easton Elementary or coaching Little League for the Easton Washington Nationals. Len has remained involved with SU as a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, as a classroom speaker and as a past board member of PACE, the University’s Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement.

Alumni Scholarship

The recipient for the Alumni Scholarship beginning in the 2015-2016 academic year was Micah Mussig ’19.

ConGRADulations Celebration

The Class of 2016 was celebrated at our senior celebration event on May 12. Student Government Association President Tyler Gibson and Salisbury University President Dr. Janet Dudley-Eshbach spoke to a crowd of over 500 graduating seniors. The event is made possible by the Alumni Associations partnership with GEICO Insurance.

Publications that reached our alumni for the 2016 fiscal year were two SU Today Campus News mailings, two SU Today Athletics News mailings (both going to a small segment of alumni) and our annual SU Magazine. The SU Magazine celebrated Salisbury University turning 90 years old as well as the master plan and other alumni stories. Distribution of the SU Magazine reaches close to 44,000.

This fiscal year, the Alumni Office has worked on the latest Alumni Directory with PCI. This publication gives our alumni an opportunity to obtain verified and approved contact information on their fellow alumni while giving the alumni office their latest contact information.

Affinity Partnerships

The SU Alumni Association has extended its relationship with GEICO for five more years. GEICO has been a tremendous partner with the SU Alumni Association, offering various insurance packages to SU alumni as well as financial support for alumni programming. They have been the title sponsor of the Senior Celebration ConGRADulations event the past few years.

College Insurance Resources provides healthcare and other programs so that we may offer our alumni the ability to purchase discounted insurance.

The SU Alumni Association has parted ways with UMB Bank with regard to their credit card service. The split is beneficial for both parties involved.

Alumni House & Garden

The Alumni House and Miller Garden continued to be a focal point for both on-campus groups and alumni hosting receptions, weddings and photo shoots. The local high schools continue to request the location for prom photos. The sale of garden bricks to parents of SU graduates in May and December have assisted in generating more revenue for upkeep and changes in the garden’s appearance.

Annual Giving

This year, the annual fund was up slightly from last year for number of donors. For fiscal year 2016, Salisbury University had 2,936 Alumni donors who gave $418,316 in cash donations that lead to a 9.6% for alumni giving. With the ever-increasing solicitable base, the percentage may continue to go down even though dollars overall have gone up.

Maroon & Gold Club

The Maroon & Gold Club had another tremendous year with the addition of 1,566 donors. The Maroon & Gold Club has brought in $283,639.47 in total dollars given, with the gifts supporting the 21 varsity sports that Salisbury University sponsors. The Sea Gull Stadium renovation project has raised $148,690.94 from 162 donors; 44 of the 162 donors are exclusive to the stadium project and do not overlap with Maroon & Gold Club giving.
