About the Program
For successfully meeting established criteria,
the National Strength and Conditioning Association officially
recognizes Salisbury University's Educational Program in
Strength and Conditioning.
The Salisbury University Master of Science program in Applied
Health Physiology is a professional degree program designed to
prepare health care professionals. Graduates of this program
should possess the vision, the knowledge and the skills
necessary to promote health and wellness in strength and
conditioning positions as well as a variety of clinical settings
(e.g., cardiac/pulmonary rehabilitation, geriatric centers,
youth centers, state and local health departments, and corporate
wellness programs). The curriculum emphasizes both theory
and practice in the preparation of administrators, technicians,
and supervisors. The program has been designed to include the
knowledge, skills, and opportunities for practice that are
essential for the development of health care and strength &
fitness professionals.
Students in this Master of Science program will have the
opportunity to read, to study, and to discuss a wide range of
theories and ideas related to health and physiology. Students
will have actual and simulated experiences in practicing the
technical, administrative, and supervisory skills of a health
care provider and strength and conditioning specialist.
Admission Requirements
A. Admission to the Master of Science (M.S.) in Applied
Health Physiology Program requires:
- Completion of a
baccalaureate degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Applicants with a cumulative GPA between 2.75 and 2.99 may be
considered.
- Completion of the application for admission to graduate
studies
- Payment of an application fee
- Submission of official transcript(s) from all
colleges/universities attended
- Two (2) academic letters of recommendation
- One-page personal letter stating your career goal(s)
- For international students, TOEFL (Test of English as a
Foreign Language) test scores* are required, or IELTS
(International English Language System) test scores.*
*The minimum TOEFL test scores in the
following areas are required for admission into the graduate
program in Applied Health Physiology: Reading Skills 22,
Listening Skills 22, Speaking Skills 25, Writing Skills 24. The
minimum IELTS test scores are: Reading Skills 6.5,
Listening Skills 6.5, Speaking Skills 7.0, Writing Skills 7.0.
B. Prerequisite undergraduate coursework for all candidates
includes:
- Human Anatomy and Physiology (eight credit hours, e.g., BIOL
215 & 216)
- Exercise Physiology (four credit hours, e.g., EXSC 332)
C. Additional prerequisite undergraduate coursework depending
on area of focus:
- For Cardiovascular/Pulmonary Rehabilitation: Stress Testing &
Exercise Prescription (four credit hours; e.g., EXSC 481). In
addition, after January 1, 2011,
Kinesiology or biomechanics (four credit hours, e.g., EXSC 333)
will also be required to meet ACSM criteria.
- For Strength & Conditioning: Kinesiology or biomechanics
(four credit hours, e.g., EXSC 333)
- For Fitness/Wellness: Stress Testing & Exercise Prescription
(four credit hours; e.g., EXSC 481)In addition, after July
1, 2011, Kinesiology or biomechanics (four credit hours,
e.g., EXSC 333) will also be required to meet ACSM criteria.
Please Note:
- Equivalent transfer (from another institution) coursework will
be evaluated for satisfying prerequisites prior to admission.
Students with a GPA > 3.0 lacking
prerequisite coursework may be granted conditional
admission by agreeing to complete prerequisite coursework within
the first-year of the program.
- A Residency/Domicile Information Form needs to be completed
for in-state tuition status.
Program of Study
The Master of Science (M.S.) in Applied Health Physiology
requires the completion of 36 credit hours, of which a minimum
of 27 credit hours are earned at Salisbury University. The
program must be completed with a cumulative Grade Point Average
no lower than 3.0, with no more than six credit hours below a
grade of B, and no grade lower than a C. A maximum of two course
repetitions for the purpose of grade improvement are allowed.
Students whose cumulative Grade Point Average falls below 3.0
will be placed on academic probation according to University
Policy.
