FERPA
Family
Educational Rights and Privacy Act
FERPA is a federal law (sometimes referred
to as the Buckley Amendment) that mandates that college academic
records are the “property” of the students and a few select
institution personnel.
Only students can share or give permission
to share their grades and enrollment status
with parents. Academic advisors, instructors, counselors,
and registration staff members are legally bound not to disclose
this information without student permission.
It is a good idea to discuss and review
this law with your student.
