Waste Management: Used Oils

Used oil is not considered a hazardous waste unless it has been contaminated with any other hazardous wastes or if the oil contains over 50 ppm of PCBs (Polychlorinated Biphenyls). Otherwise, most used oils can be recycled for reuse. EHS sends used oil collected on campus to a facility approved to recycle or dispose of the oil. Generators of used oil should minimize the amount of water in the oil and be able to certify that no other hazardous chemicals are present in the oil.
