Students in the Salisbury University Communication Arts Living Learning Community hosted their third annual “American Dinner” for students enrolled in SU’s English Language Institute and for interested community members. The Communication students plan and host the event for their international guests to teach them more about American culture. For the 2016 dinner, CMAT students baked 40 potatoes to create a potato bar, plus made dessert. Attendees socialized, played games, and danced. The event was co-hosted by Mary Angela Baker, Director of SU’s Center for Extended and Lifelong Learning, and LLC faculty Lori DeWitt and Chrys Egan.
The Communication Arts Department hosted international journalists from the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program on September 22, 2016. Meeting in the beautiful University House, Humphrey Fellows from India, Pakistan, Tanzania, Latvia, South Africa, Mexico, Turkey, Nepal and Paraguay shared the challenges journalists face in their home countries with freshman students from CMAT’s Living Learning Community under the direction of Dr. Chrys Egan and members of SU’s English Language Center. The Fellows also toured Conway Hall’s media facilities, attended a luncheon with Dean Maarten Pereboom and CMAT Chair Bryan Horikami and heard a presentation by Delmarva Public Media’s Program Director Chris Ranck and News Director Don Roeck. The Humphrey Fellows are based at the University of Maryland College Park and spend a year in the United States studying our country’s mass media, political and social systems. Salisbury University has been an associate campus partner for the Humphrey Fellows Program since 2010 and is overseen by CMAT Associate Professor David Burns. Select pictures below:
CMAT 297 - Communication Research

The purpose of this course to introduce students to research methods used most often by communication scholars. Those methods include but are not limited to: surveys, experimental methods, content analysis, rhetorical criticism, ethnography, interviews and focus groups. Students learn essential research and writing skills through projects created in areas of interest such as interpersonal communication, organizational communication, mass media and advertising/public relations. Prerequisite: C or better in CMAT 101 and CMAT 102. This class uses collaborative community research to improve your research skills, enhance your employability, support our community, and connect the university with its neighbors.

Salisbury University Communication Arts students visited the Maryland General Assembly on Friday, December 9. Students were invited by our local Delegates Chris Adams ( District 37B, Caroline, Dorchester, Talbot, & Wicomico Counties ) and Delegate Carl Anderton ( District 38B, Wicomico County ), who were guest speakers in SU’s Political Communication course earlier in the semester. The Delegates arranged a “behind the scenes” tour that included meetings with Comptroller Peter Franchot and Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford. We also met with outgoing SU Gov. Relations Officer Robby Sheehan and incoming officer Eli Modlin (recent SU CMAT grad). SU students were enrolled in Political Communication, Communication Research, and Communication Practicum with PACE. Many SU graduates were working in the capital, including the offices for Franchot and Rutherford. Select pictures below:
