Curriculum Guide

The Committee Role

Receives curriculum proposals from departments.
Reviews proposals and submits approved proposals to the University Curriculum Committee (UCC).
Provides feedback and suggests revisions to the department chair for proposals that are not approved.

The Committee Composition

The committee has six voting members: five faculty serving two-year terms and one faculty elected by the Faculty Senate serving a three-year term as a representative to the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee. The School Dean or designee, Registrar or designee, Library Liaison, and Advising Services Coordinator shall be ex officio and non-voting members. The committee shall elect its chairperson annually.

Purpose of the Fulton School Curriculum Committee

The members of the Fulton School Curriculum Committee are committed to the integrity and quality of the Liberal Arts Curriculum of Salisbury University. We are dedicated to working with faculty and the University Curriculum Committee in making adjustments to the Liberal Arts Curriculum that uphold the University’s commitment to a quality education and academic integrity. Bearing in mind that the Fulton School carries the largest share of General Education offerings, we are particularly attentive to the breadth and depth as well as diversity of the School’s offerings.

In the hope of maintaining fidelity in form and content to the standards of the School, the University and the great traditions of the liberal arts, the following issues are considered during procedural review of all proposals submitted to the committee:

- June 1 - Updated Curriculum Proposal Forms Available in Curriculog.
- October 1 - Suggested Deadline for Initiating Next Fall’s Proposals (Courses and/or Programs).
- December 9 – Next Fall’s Proposals Must Be Approved by UCC.
- March 1 - Suggested Deadline for Initiating Next Spring’s Proposals (Courses Only).
- April & May – Curriculum Proposals Cannot Be Initiated/Submitted. Faculty may work to gather all materials needed for proposal submission. In addition, proposals that have already been launched will continue to work their way through the approval process.
- May 12 - Spring Proposals Must Be Approved by UCC.
Academic Integrity of Proposal
Does the proposal:
- demonstrate quality and academic rigor;
- sustain academic integrity through course objectives, frequency of offering, clarity of student responsibilities, and amount and level of work required as indicated by course number;
- contain a reasonable balance of core and elective requirements;
- prolong the student’s time to degree;
- meet the total credit minimums and maximums for majors & minors;
- fit within the School;
- have a relationship to and extension of the Fulton School Mission.
Effects on Fulton School Programs and Departments
Does the proposal:
- overlap with or duplicate existing programs/courses;
- have a relationship to and possible impact on existing programs/courses;
Interdisciplinary and Interdepartmental Proposals
Does the proposal include:
- correct and thorough documentation from collaborating entities and departments.
General Education, WAC, an SU Online Standards
Does the proposal satisfy:
- the Writing Across the Curriculum standards and including WAC statement in syllabus;
- the general education objectives and criteria including the general education checklist;
- the SU Online Learning Policy including an online/hybrid course checklist.
Rationale
The proposal’s rationale is:
- thorough and complete;
- supported by the proposed changes/additions.
Staffing, Library, and Equipment resources requests
Does the proposal include:
- documentation of requests made to the department library liaison;
- requests appropriate to the proposal.
Typically, the committee reviews completed proposals, consulting with submitting faculty on any issues about which we have concerns. Inviting submitting faculty for discussion of a proposal under review is, while not standard practice, common in situations in which the proposal itself does not adequately address the committee’s concerns.

The committee also regularly addresses and makes recommendations to appropriate bodies regarding procedure and substance of curriculum review.
