Student Frequently Asked Questions

About the ABLE Program

What is an Internship?

An internship is an on-site learning experience in a work setting that is related to a student’s particular major and personal interests.  All business students are required to complete am Applied Business Learning Experience as a part of their undergraduate degree.  Finance, Information Systems, and Economic majors have practicum and portfolio courses that can substitute for an internship experience.

Students receiving credit for their internship experience will need to work approximately 10 hours per week for 10 weeks during the semester, a minimum of 100 hours of on-site experience.  The work site experience must be completed at the same time a student is registered in and completing the 490/491 three credit class.

When can I complete my internship for credit?

Students applying for an internship for credit must meet minimum criteria including being admitted to the Perdue School of Business, being at least a second semester junior, and completing some course pre-requisites.

For information on student requirements, Click Here.

Before applying for an internship for credit, students must attend an ABLE Internship Workshop at least one semester prior to an internship.  Finance or Information Systems students who will be enrolling in a practicum (ACCT 449) or experiential learning course (INFO 476) to satisfy their ABLE requirement do not need to attend an ABLE workshop.

The ABLE Internship Program also includes a required three credit class available during the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters only.  Additional internships are always encouraged and students may agree to perform internship duties outside of these time periods but only internship hours completed during the recognized fall, spring, and summer semesters will count toward the internship credit requirement.

What is the process for finding and securing an internship?

Internships can be found using eRecruiting or created through personal networks.  As part of the job seeking process, students need to apply, interview, and be selected for an internship prior to registering for an internship course for credit.   The selection of a student by a company will be very similar to selection for employment.  Students should:

  • Upload a resume and provide an electronic cover letter when requested.

  • Use eRecruiting to apply directly to organizations with available internships.

  • Prepare for an interview and dress appropriately when meeting employers.  Employers will contact students directly to schedule an interview and to notify students of an internship offer.

  • After receiving an internship offer from a company, complete all the paperwork from the ABLE Internship Workbook including the ABLE Internship Credit Agreement Form. The ABLE Internship Credit Agreement form must be signed by the student intern, the internship company, the student's department chair, and the ABLE office for a student to enroll in the required 490/491 class that accompanies all internships for credit.

The ABLE office does not place students in internships.  However, if you have any questions or are having problems finding an internship please contact the ABLE office for guidance.

Can I complete an internship with my current employer?

Students can do an internship with a current employer.  However, the internship can not include normal duties already performed by the student.  Internships with current employers must include new assignments and/or projects specifically related to a student's major.  Internships with current employers must be approved by the student's department chair and by the ABLE office to be eligible for credit.
