To be a social worker,
one must have a degree in social work from a program
accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
SU’s Social Work Undergraduate Program, accredited since
1974, prepares graduates through the use of both
standard classroom study and practical field experience.
The latter, which is critical to social work education,
is provided in social agencies throughout the area to
provide seniors with the "hands on" experience necessary
to develop entry level skills. Graduates of the program are awarded a Bachelor of Arts in
Social Work (BASW).
To make the program more accessible to
Maryland residents across the state, the full BASW curriculum is being
offered at the Elkton Station site of Cecil College, the Eastern
Shore Higher Education Center at Wye Mills, and the University System of
Maryland at Hagerstown. Courses at all three sites are offered in a blended
manner at time convenient to the working student. In addition, admission to
Salisbury University is a relatively seamless process for students
graduating from a local community college in those areas. For
additional information refer to our
Satellite Program brochure.
In addition to the traditional degree in
social work, the department offers a unique cooperative dual degree program
with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES).
Through this program students in the Department of Social Sciences at
UMES can earn both a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from UMES and a
Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from SU. Download our
Dual Degree Program brochure.
For additional information on the dual degree program refer to our SU/UMES Dual Degree Web
