I love how teaching at SU encourages innovative approaches to age-old
questions. Recently, I have developed one course on how different cultural
traditions conceive of the earth and another on the philosophy of sports.
The former involved building a sweat lodge on the beach at Assateague Island!
At the moment I am putting together a course on being responsible to others, as
it is articulated in the thought of Derrida, Rosenzweig and Levinas, important
thinkers in Europe during the 20th century. Outside of class, I
particularly enjoy spending time with students in my capacity as a mentor for
the Eastern Correctional Institution Group Discussions Program. This
program matches students with groups organized at a medium-security state prison
for the purpose of discussing philosophical ideas. As far as scholarship
goes, I have published essays on subjects ranging from the Biblical story of
Cain to the uncanny goodness of being edible to bears. My book,
Suffering Witness: The Quandary of Responsibility after the Irreparable,
provides an account of Paul Celan's poetry and the responsibility to witness the
Holocaust that it elicits. This project in turn has led to my working to
establish a philosophical society for the study of Continental Philosophy
in a Jewish context. I am also working on projects involving the
phenomenological thought of Merleau-Ponty, as well as an environmental ethics of
walking.
