HIST 384- Native American History: Competing Voices & Resilience--Sample Syllabus

Offered with civic engagement enhancement: Fall 2014; Fall 2015

The capstone assignment centers around the theme of: “contested and entangled histories: taking action in the new millennium,” which asks how can we promote more connections between American and Indian history, and thus help address current legacies of the colonial past? Students develop a nuanced and in-depth knowledge of one tribal nation’s history from origins to present, and develop a civic action plan to help promote a better understanding and appreciation of that nation’s history in our class- and campus-community. Students also have the option of developing a plan for community action to help address a specific issue faced by current Native communities (environmental issues, education, poverty, etc). The project stretches throughout the semester, consisting of a series of short group assignments (research bibliography, prospectus, short historical sketch), an individual 7-8 page final research paper, and a public oral presentation of the groups’ findings (with poster or powerpoint) as part of on-campus programming during SU’s Native American Heritage Month in November. In addition to conducting historical research in published and online sources, students draw from many class experiences, including field trips to a local Indian longhouse and the National Museum of the American Indian, Washington D.C. to complete this project.
