Lambda Eta Chapter
The Lambda Eta Chapter, offers an opportunity for recognition to nursing
majors who demonstrate superior achievement, leadership qualities, and creative
work. The Society fosters high professional standards and endeavors to
strengthen commitment to the ideals and purposes of the profession. Students
will be invited for membership after completion of at least one-half of the
required curriculum and encouraged to maintain membership for
the duration of their nursing careers.
Eta Chapter usually has two educational dinner meetings
per year, a general business meeting, the induction
ceremony with a speaker, and participates in a local
community service event. The chapter also sends a
delegation to the Biennial Convention every other year.
For the past three conventions speakers have been
selected from Lambda Eta to present their academic work
at the international convention. Two scholarships are
awarded yearly to SU undergraduate and graduate

2014 Events & News
Lambda Eta is selling Fisher's
Popcorn again this semester as our fundraiser. The
profit is used to fund 2 scholarships for students and
to pay for 2 delegates to attend the Biennial
Convention. All members are asked to pre-sell popcorn
and help us reach our goals. Orders are due by Friday
April 4 to Karen Badros. See below for the order form

Popcorn Fundraiser Order
Eta Chapter of STTI is holding a Fisher's popcorn
fundraiser this Spring. The sale starts Monday, March
10 and runs through Friday, April 4.
The prices are the same as last year:
Half gallon tubs - $10 ($11 with peanuts) Gallon tubs -
$18 ($19 with peanuts)
2 oz. bags - $2 each (available with peanuts, no extra
6 oz. bags - $4 each ($5 with peanuts)
1 lb. taffy - $7
Items ordered will be ready for pick-up from the
Department of Nursing, Devilbiss Hall Second Floor,
during the week of April 14th (the week before Easter).
Payment is due in advance when you turn in your order.
Payment may be in cash (exact amount is appreciated) or
check made out to Lambda Eta for total amount. Order
forms and payment should be given to Karen Badros,
Devilbiss Hall Room 207. Orders and payment must be
received by Friday, April 4th at 4:00 PM.

Chapter Key Award - We did it
again. Win #2! - Lambda Eta
submitted their CKA Application this past summer. Thanks to
the team of Lisa, Edie, Bill, and Jeff. We earned this
award for the first time the last biennium '09-'11.
President Willey accepted the award in Indianapolis at
the International Biennial Convention
in November. See Jeff below with the award in his hand

Tri-State Regional Consortium - a
morning conference and brunch - Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013 in
Philadelphia, PA was attended by 6 members of Lambda
Eta. It was a great networking event.
The fall leadership education event
was held Wednesday Oct. 30 at SU. The speaker was Dr.
George Taler who spoke on Health Care Reform. The event
was co-sponsored by Lambda Eta, SU Dept. of Nursing, and
Johns Hopkins and was attended by over 200 people.
The 2013 Induction was held Sunday Nov. 10, 2013 at 2pm at SU's Perdue Hall.
Thirty-three students and 4 community leaders were
inducted into the Lambda Eta chapter of the Honor
Society. The first Lambda Eta Life Time Award was
presented to Denise Conklin.

Our Third Annual Evidence Based
Practice Conference was held at PRMC on Tuesday April 30, 2013.
The response was great. Thanks to all the oral and

Biennial Convention was featured on page 3 of the STTI
Chapter Leader Emphasis publication for March 2013, Vol.
20, Issue 1. Go Lambda Eta - what a way to make
international news. Lambda Eta has submitted their
Chapter Key Award application for 2013. Thanks to Lisa
Seldomridge, Jeff Willey, Bill Campbell, and Edie Hooke
for hours of work compiling all the information. And

Fall Educational Event
- was held October 24th. Our speaker was Mr. Phillip Bovender, RN, the Maryland
State Liaison for the American Red Cross. He discussed opportunities for nurses to become involved
with the American Red Cross. It was very timely
considering the events of this fall.
Induction Ceremony - Our 2012
Induction was held November 4, 2012. Thirty two students
and community leaders were inducted into membership. The
speaker for the event was Senator Richard Colburn.

2012 Events & News
Educational Dinner Event - 2nd Annual Evidence Based Practice (EBP)
Conference was held on April 26, 2012 at PRMC. Co-hosted
by PRMC and AGH with Lambda Eta. There were over 120
attendees who listened to 3 excellent podium
presentations and viewed over 20 posters.
Community Service for this spring -
the Kidney Walk (National Kidney Foundation of Maryland)
The first walk was held on April 15 at Cape Henlopen
State Park in Lewes, DE and the second walk was held on May 6 at Winterplace in Salisbury,
MD. Lambda Eta through the generous donations of the
chapter, its members, SU faculty, friends, and students
was able to raise over $500.
2011 Events & News
GOOD NEWS!! - Lambda Eta was awarded
the Chapter Key Award at the 41st Biennial Sigma Theta
Tau International Convention in Grapevine Texas. Lambda
Eta was a first time recipient for this award. The CKA
is the highest award given to a local chapter for their
membership involvement and chapter/individual
accomplishments. The award was made by Dr. Karen Morin,
President of STTI, and Dr. Pat Thompson, CEO of STTI.
Lambda Eta's work with the Girl Scout Nursing
Exploration Fair was highlighted at both the chapter
awards presentation and also by Dr. Morin in her opening

Nov. 13th in Perdue Hall. Our speaker was Cynthia Diefenbeck, PsyD, APRN, BC. Cynthia is
the Chair of the STT International Governance
Committee and has served in many other international,
regional, and local positions. Forty three new
members were inducted.
Lambda Eta Leadership Dinner &
Educational Event was held Thursday Nov. 17th at 5:30 in
the Worcester Rm of the Commons at SU. A panel
discussion with a group of 4 nurses speaking on their
recent transition of roles within nursing was our topic for
the evening. Nurses, faculty, and students joined Lambda
Eta members for the informative panel discussion.

April 4, 2011 - the Lambda Eta Chapter's
Spring Dinner Meeting for our annual Leadership
initiative was held. This year's title was "Leadership in Nursing:
Innovations in Legislation - Making Friends and
Influencing People." The speaker was Susan Delean
Botkin, CRNP, MSN. Twenty members and guests attended to
hear about successful nursing leadership in the Maryland
April 26, 2011 - the Lambda Eta Chapter
co-sponsored an Ethics Conference entitled "Letting Go
in the 21st Century: The Ethics of Heroic Care."
Over 140 people attended.
Lambda Eta Chapter and its members supported
the St. Patty's Day Walk and the Kidney Walk.
Oct. 13, 2010 - Lambda Eta held
their annual New Member Orientation meeting. Members of
the Board shared info about STTI and Lambda Eta and what
they mean to them.
Oct. 17, 2010 - Tri~State Consortium
Brunch in Philadelphia. Keynote speaker was Karen Morin,
President Sigma Theta Tau International, speaking on
leadership. The event included a display of Dr. Campbell's Civil War Medicine &
Nursing artifacts and documents. Below is Dr. Morin with

Nov 14, 2010 - Lambda Eta held
its Induction Ceremony for new members. Thirty four new
members were inducted. Our speaker was Anne Muller,
Region 12 Coordinator, who spoke about the benefits of
membership in Sigma Theta Tau International.

Nov. 16, 2010 - Fall Dinner Meeting
with MNA and PRMC was at the Hollowell Center at PRMC.
Dr. Rita Nutt gave an overview of Evidence Based
Practice and three clinical speakers shared their
current research projects. See

for presenters and topics. The meeting was attended by
90 attendees. Due to the success of this year and the
feedback from the attendees the conference will be
continued in the future as an annual event. Look for
this event again in the spring of 2012.
Spring & Summer 2010
On February 15th Dr. Thea McDowell and
Prof. Katie Hinderer presented "Health Care in China:
East Meets West." They shared the journey they made to China
with a group of students last June, discussed traditional
Chinese medicine and health care including acupuncture & moxibustion, and
told about cultural differences impacting health
The program was a dinner meeting with an Oriental
menu enjoyed by all.
On May 2, 2010
Lambda Eta participated in the Salisbury Kidney Walk as
our Spring Community Service Project. Our team walked
and raised money for the Kidney Association.
During the summer Lambda Eta worked at the
Shorebirds Concession Stand for five games this season.
We raised money for scholarships, dinner speakers,
convention, and community service events. Thanks to all
members who helped us with this goal.

Lambda Eta's educational offering
this fall was in association with the Delmarva
Chapter of American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
On Friday Sept. 18, 2009 Carla Jackson, MSW, LCSW-C,
spoke on "How Can I Help?" Bringing Comfort and
Compassion to the Dying Patient and Their Family.
Ms Jackson came to us from
the Palliative Medicine Dept of Greater Baltimore
Medical Center and the University of Maryland.

Theta Tau International Dr. William Campbell, President, and
Carlene Campbell represented Lambda Eta as 1st and 2nd
Delegates in the House of Delegates held at the Biennial
Indianapolis from October 30 - November 4, 2009.

he co-chairs and that Lambda Eta collaborates on.

Girl Scout Nursing Exploration
Fair Lambda Eta once again assisted
with the Girl Scout Nursing Exploration Fair on
November 14, 2009 in Devilbiss Hall. Eighty-six
Girl Scouts visited SU to learn about
nursing, potential nursing careers, and health education
on this day. Denise Conklin and Jaimi Hall presented the
Opening Session for the girls with Carlene Campbell in
the role of Florence Nightingale stopping by for a
visit. Bill and Stacy Cottingham, Lambda Eta Vice
President, are Co-Chairs for the event now in its third

Lambda Eta 2009 Induction
The Induction Ceremony for new members to
Lambda Eta was held on November 15, 2009. Twenty-eight
traditional first degree, second degree, and graduate
students (see photo below) were inducted to the Lambda Eta chapter of
Sigma Theta Tau International. The speaker for Induction
Steven Rose, RN, President and CEO of Nanticoke Health
Services in Seaford, DE. He spoke about his role as a
nurse, a military officer, and later a hospital
administrator and the importance of leadership
throughout his career.
