(HSS) home page!
This website is designed for students majoring in one of
the HSS majors and for HSS faculty. It is designed to make your
research experience more efficient and more comprehensive. For questions
about the library or suggestions to improve this web site, please contact

Databases
Databases by Health & Sport Sciences (HSS) Subdivision
GENERAL 'DO IT ALL' DATABASES
Academic Search Complete (This multi-disciplinary database provides full text
for more than 4,650 journals, including full text for more than 3,900
peer-reviewed titles.) This general database covers just about any topic
you can imagine and includes many full text articles with links to other full
text articles on our other databases. If you don't know what database to
go to, Academic Search Complete is a good place to start!
ArticleFirst (Indexes articles on business, science, humanities, social
sciences, medicine, technology, and popular culture.) This not a full
text database, but it does have links to full text articles on our other
databases. What makes this general database special is that it covers about
12,000 journals and it has a function in the 'advanced search' mode that allows
the searcher to designate only those articles that are in the SU print journal
collection (1,100+ journals). This is the only database at SU that has this
function.
Web of Science (Citations on science, technology, social sciences and arts &
humanities.) While this is a wide ranging database, it includes articles on many
HPEHP related topics. The special thing about this database is that it offers
many links to articles that cite the original articles, as well as some links to
articles that the original article has cited. This is unique among all
our databases.
HEALTH EDUCATION DATABASES
ERIC (EBSCO: Educational Resource Information Center) Comprehensive
education database includes articles and documents on physical education.
Web version at
www.eric.ed.gov/ The web version does not link to full text articles
available through our subcription databases, so it is usually better to use the
EBSCO version.
MEDLINE (EBSCO: Provides authoritative medical
information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health
care system, pre-clinical sciences, etc. Very comprehensive medical
database, but many articles may need to be ordered through Interlibrary Loan
which may take anywhere from a few days to 2 weeks to get here. albeit that a
few days is more common.
Nursing & Allied Health Source (ProQuest: Find complete, full-text
information from leading nursing, allied health, and related publications.
Designed to meet the needs of researchers at health-care facilities as well as
students enrolled in nursing and allied health programs at academic
institutions.)
ScienceDirect (Mostly Full-text scientific database on physical sciences and
engineering, life sciences, health sciences, and social sciences and
humanities.)
Web of Science (Citations on science, technology, social sciences and arts &
humanities. See notation above.)
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
ERIC (EBSCO: Educational Resource Information Center) Comprehensive
education database includes articles and documents on physical education.
Web version at
www.eric.ed.gov/ The web version does not link to full text articles
available through our subcription databases, so it is usually better to use the
EBSCO version.
Physical Education Index (Abstracts from peer-reviewed journals, report
literature, conference proceedings, trade magazines, patents, articles from the
popular press, etc. featuring content on physical education curricula, sports
medicine, dance, sport law, kinesiology, motor learning, recreation,
standardized fitness tests, sports equipment, business and marketing, coaching
and training, and sport sociology/psychology, health education and physical
therapy.) [Download
a PDF handout]
Web of Science (Citations on science, technology, social sciences and arts &
humanities. See notation above.)
HUMAN PERFORMANCE (EXERCISE SCIENCE; also useful for Athletic Training)
Physical Education Index (Abstracts from peer-reviewed journals (see
notation above). This is not a full text database. but there are links to some
full text articles from our FIND IT function. This is the only SU database
dedicated specifically to a wide spectrum of physical education topics.

MEDLINE (EBSCO: Provides authoritative medical

care system, pre-clinical sciences, etc. Very comprehensive medical

MISCELLANEOUS DATABASES (that might be useful to
HPEHP research)
JSTOR (Collections for Arts & Sciences I, II, III, Business and Botany and
Ecology) This database is not generally oriented to HSS topics, but it
does overlap into some HPEHP areas. The most recent articles are 3 to 4
years old. What makes this database special is that essentially all
articles are scholarly and full text, and these articles go back a long way,
even into the 19th and 20th centuries, in some cases. This database is
very good for getting historical background information if you can find
something on your topic.
Newspapers (National) Allows one to cross search five major U.S.
newspapers, several of which have historical components. Older coverage of four
national newspapers can be found individually under the Historical
newspaper section. The New York Times has article extending back to 1851,
the Baltimore Sun back to 1837!
Journals covering Health & Sport Sciences (HSS) topics can be found several
different places. First, there is our print journal collection (see list
below). Second, there is our online collection accessed through our
numerous Databases. Third, there is the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) option
from which you can request articles from libraries across the U.S.
Getting an article from this latter option can take
anywhere from a few days to two weeks, plus or minus. If the article comes
through the mail it can take two weeks or more, but usually most ILL articles
are delivered electronically by email within a few days.
ILL, also known as
ILLIAD here at SU, can be
accessed by two ways. One through a direct link to ILLIAD found on our
home page and a second method where you can click on the amber
button accessed from
within the record of an article found in ONE OF our many databases. The
'FIND IT' button will link you to information that tells you whether the
article is available 1) Online OR 2) In Print or 3) must be ordered through
ILLIAD. If you have any questions about this process, please email Mr.
Robb at ggrobb@salisbury.edu.
